The SCA's Nadia Shihab Sitting Room, 1987 is showing on the Libby Leshgold Gallery's Urban Screen (520 E. 1st Ave., Vancouver) from November 18, 2024 – March 18, 2025, commissioned for and presented as part of the City of Vancouver’s Public Art Program. More HERE.
Dickinson talks the richness of Vancouver's dance scene & Walking Mediations
The SCA's Peter Dickinson, author of 2020's My Vancouver Dance History: Story, Movement, Community (McGill-Queen's University Press) and also the SCA's current Director, was a guest on CBC Radio's On the Coast with Gloria Macarenko, talking about "the richness of Vancouver's dance scene." Also, Dickinson is presenting his essay, "Walking Mediations: Choreographing Urban Accessemblages Along the Pacific Rim," which discusses the SCA's Justine Chambers’ “Choreography Walk” in Vancouver, graffiti tagging in LA, and Wong Kar-Wai’s Hong Kong films, on Day 2 of the Urban Mediations: International Conference on the Narratives, Ecologies, and Poetics of the City, which runs December 5 & 6, 2024, at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Cairo Fabric of the Everyday
The SCA's Sabine Bitter has been posting great installation images on her Instagram of the exhibition Cairo Fabric of the Everyday, curated by her, her longtime collaborator Helmut Weber, and Huda Lutfi, which also includes work by SCA alumnus Mena El Shazly, running to November 28, at the Austrian Cultural Forum (1103 Corniche El-Nile, Garden City, 1st Floor, Apt. 7). TPE on Songs of War I Have Seen – Music on Texts of Gertrude Stein
Our colleagues in SFU's Vancity Office of Community Engagement are presenting two events exploring Gertrude Stein’s life and work with Turning Point Ensemble, which has the SCA's Owen Underhill as Artistic Director and conductor. First is a FREE panel discussion with Renée Sarojini Saklikar, Rachel Kiyo Iwaasa, Adam J. Frank, Peter Hatch, and moderator Betsy Warland, on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at 5:00 PM in the Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema here at 149 W. Hastings Street, Vancouver. More HERE. SFMF everywhere
As well as running a successful in-person and online festival in Vancouver, the Small File Media Festival team have also been running Small File workshops internationally, including at the BRAC University ENH Department in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on October 17, 2024, led by Senior Lecturer Mohammad Zaki Rezwan and the SCA's Laura U. Marks (more HERE), and as part of the BETA Festival in Dublin, Ireland, which ran November 1 – 17, 2024 (more HERE). Upcoming, the SFMF team will also be involved with the Cairo Video Festival, set to run December 1 – 17, 2024 (more HERE), and a version of the festival (with all local creators) and workshop is running at the Digital Culture Center in Mexico City from November 29 – December 1, 2024, led by SCA alumnus Juan Manuel Sepúlveda (more HERE). PuSh 2025
There are so many SCA folks in the just released 2025 line up for the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, who are celebrating their 20th Anniversary, including: A Wake of Vultures (SCA alumni Nancy Tam, Conor Wylie, and Dan O’Shea), who are presenting SEEING DOUBLE: K BODY AND MIND and Walking at Night by Myself, which also includes SCA alumni Mahaila Patterson-O’Brien, Angela Magpantay, Giselle Liu, and Charlie Cooper in different capacities; SCA alumnus Fay Nass, who's the Artistic Director of the frank theatre company, is curating Club PuSh (and is that Arthi Chandra dancing away in the PR image?); Chimerik 似不像 (SCA alumni Caroline MacCaull and Sammy Chien) are presenting Inner Sublimity, with SCA alumni Jonathan Kim as Lighting Designer; rice & beans theatre (which has SCA alumni Pedro Chamale as Artistic Director and Angela Magpantay as Interim Artistic Director) and Boca del Lupo are presenting Lasa Ng Imperyo (A Taste of Empire); and SCA alumnus David Mesiha is the co-creator, co-director, and composer and sound designer for Theatre Conspiracy's SWIM, which has SCA student Jillian Jarin as Assistant Stage Manager. Also, SCA alumni Cori Caulfield and current Sessional Instructor Nicole Rose Bond is part of Dances for a Small Stage, the SCA's Erika Latta and SCA alumnus Johnny Wu are on the Board of Directors, and SCA alumnus Brian Postalian is PuSh's Industry Producer. New leadership and new directions for Vancouver dance institutions
SCA alumnus Deanna Peters and Victor Tran, Co-Directors of the VIDF (Vancouver International Dance Festival), were some of the folks interviewed by Tessa Perkins Deneault, the Manager of Communications & Strategy for the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology, for her new article, "New leadership and new directions for Vancouver dance institutions," in the latest edition of The Dance Centre's Fall 2024 Magazine. Forest in Future Worldings
SCA PhD student Sun Forest is part of the exhibition Future Worldings, curated by Lisa Baldissera, Usha Seejarim, and Karen Tam, which runs to December 15, 2024, at Griffin Art Projects (1174 Welch St., North Vancouver). In support of the exhibition, Forest is presenting Bio)Material Futures, a "workshop engaging with biomaterials as a fluid, complex space of radical possibility," on Sunday, December 8, 2024, from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM, at the Griffin, too. Caprara talks Ultra Violets
Pancouver interviewed SCA alumnus Alexandra Caprara about Ultra Violets, originally her MFA graduating work, which is being presented as part of IndieFest, running November 21 & 22, 2024, at Signals Studio at the Centre for Digital Media (577 Great Northern Way, Vancouver). SCA alumnus Salome Nieto is one of the dancers and collaborators in Mitochondrial Ontologies: Deep Time and the Digital by Gabriela Aceves Sepúlveda, Associate Professor at the School of Interactive Arts + Technology, which "uses the concept of mitochondria as a metaphor to explore the female body as a generative host of human and non-human life." TOA Collective in FLEET
The Burnaby Art Gallery have announced the schedule of artists activating the FLEET Mobile Art Studio in Edmonds Park (7433 Humphries Ave., Burnaby), which includes The Only Animal Collective (SCA alumni Sena Cleave, Toni-Leah C. Yake, and Barbara Adler, who's also TOA's Artistic Director, and Tristan Sober-Blodgett, Ysabel Gana, Anju Singh, and Julia Ulehla) from August 3 – September 27, 2025, who "will hold a group residency to explore how handmade textile environments can set the stage for climate care, and heighten relationships between people and place. The group will take a variety of approaches to offering workshops and events over the course of their stay, and hope to encourage community connection across many media."
