"We have no time to excuse the suffering of those we recognize as our own"

The SCA's Raymond Boisjoly is one of the co-authors and signatories of this "Statement of Concern from Members of the International Indigenous Arts Community to Institutions Worldwide," which was issued in response to the controversial and secretive firing of Wanda Nanibush from the Art Gallery of Ontario, where she was the assistant curator of Canadian and Indigenous Art in the department of Canadian art, and their first Indigenous curator. Alarmed by the ongoing situation of the Palestinian people, Nanibush was apparently fired because she was outspoken about the brutal bombing of Gaza, triggered by Hamas' violent attacks on October 7. As the statement makes clear, Nanibush's outspokenness is not only aligned with her politics and Indigeneity, which also infuse her work as an artist and curator, but arguably also with the policies of decolonization and Indigenization that the AGO and other galleries in Canada say they uphold. Also signed by SCA alumni Michelle Sound, Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill, Krystle Silverfox, and Dylan Robinson, and SCA MFA students Lauren Crazybull and Cody Tolmie (at the time of this posting), you can read the full statement HERE.
