Please join us for a free screening of short films by the independent artist, filmmaker, and researcher, Karel Doing.

Presented by The Bucket Collective, with support from Unit/Pitt, and the SFU School for the Contemporary Arts.

Biography

Karel Doing is an independent artist, filmmaker, and researcher whose practice investigates the relationship between culture and nature by means of analogue and organic process, experiment, and co-creation. His work has been shown worldwide at festivals, in cinemas, on stage, and in galleries. He was a founder member of Studio één, a pioneering DiY film laboratory. He has invented “phytography,” a technique that combines plants and photochemical emulsion.

Join visiting artist Karel Doing, inventor of the phytogram process, for an afternoon of image propagation at Unit/Pitt.

Phytography is a technique that leaves detailed chemical traces of plants directly on photographic emulsion. Hands-on practice with 16mm film film will be accompanied by discussion of the historical lineage of phytograms, experimental image making practice and ecological mindfulness. Participants will gather plants, create their own images and see the results in projection.
