The SCA's James Long is in Norway presenting And We Cheerfully Put the Gods to Death, created by Spreafico Eckly with Helga Guren and Long, from September 5 – 7, 2024, in Bergen at Studio Bergen (Carte Blanche – Nøstegaten 119, 5011 Bergen) and on September 12 & 13 in Stavanger at RIMI/IMIR SceneKunst (Badehusgata 25, 4014 Stavanger).

El Shazly and Wei up for the Lind

SCA alumnus Mena El Shazly and SCA PhD student Casey Wei join Karice Mitchell, Dion Smith-Dokkie, and Parumveer Walia have all been nominated for the 2024 Lind Prize, administered by The Polygon Gallery, the endowment for which the Lind family has increased to $1-million. All of the nominees will be included in The Lind Biennial, which is set to run November 9, 2024 – February 2, 2025, at the Polygon (101 Carrie Cates Ct., North Vancouver). More HERE.

The SCA's Jin-me Yoon (#2 Visual Artist) and Turning Point Ensemble (#3 Classical Music Ensemble), which has the SCA's Owen Underhill as conductor and Artistic Director, are included as winners in The Georgia Straight's annual "Best of Vancouver" listings. Low’s anthology a City of Vancouver Book Award Finalist

What Are Our Supports? is a finalist for the 2024 City of Vancouver Award. Co-edited by SCA PhD student and curator Joni Low and art historian Jeff O’Brien, the anthology features 23 contributors, including Jeff Derksen (SFU Department of English), Andrew Yong Hoon Lee, Alexa Solveig Mardon, SCA alumnus Charlene Vickers, Michele Helen Mackenzie, incoming SCA PhD student Eliza Ferrari, and Shadbolt Fellow Germaine Koh. The awards ceremony will take place during the Vancouver Writers’ Festival on October 25, Granville Island’s Revue Stage. Congratulations, Joni and team! Read more about the book HERE.

Sound activates FLEET

The Burnaby Art Gallery announced SCA alumnus Michelle Sound and Eliot White-Hill, Kwulasultun as the next Visiting Artists "activating the FLEET mobile art studio in Edmonds Park from September to November 2024." Also, Sound and White-Hill, Kwulasultun are holding an artist talk and gathering on September 14 at 4:00 PM at Edmonds Park (corner of Humphries Ave. and Rosewood St.)  More HERE.

RAG screening Wilfred Buck

The Richmond Art Gallery is presenting a free screening SCA alumnus Lisa Jackson's "award-winning hybrid documentary feature" Wilfred Buck (2024), on Thursday, September 26, 2024, from 6:15 PM – 8:30 PM at the Richmond Cultural Centre Performance Hall (7700 Minoru Gate, Richmond), featuring introductory remarks (via Zoom) by Jackson, presented with support from the National Film Board and Door Number 3 Productions.RSVP and more info HERE.

Generations funded

Kinesis Dance, which has SCA alumnus Rachel Helten as Artistic Director/Choreographer, announced that they received funding from the Government of Canada's New Horizons for Seniors Program for their project Generations, which they describe as "a multifaceted dance project rooted in the transformative power of contemporary dance and music, specifically tailored for underserved populations in care facilities of Metro Vancouver." The Soldier's Lagoon

Slow Socials: Around Sound

Music on Main's just-announced 2024/25 season includes a team-up with The Only Animal, which has SCA alumnus Barbara Adler as Artistic Director, on Slow Socials: Around Sound, which will bring artists from both MoM's season and TOA’s sound installation project AWSS (Autumn-Winter, Spring-Summer) together for artistic exchanges and informal discussions. More info is to come, but in the meantime, here's the full season announcement. The Only Animal is also working in partnership with the Vancouver Park Board, Emily Carr University of Art & Design, and the Roundhouse to present another round of free Slow Social Club events from September 29 – November 24, 2024. Homebuddies

We missed this one at the time (sorry!), but SCA alumnus Torien Cafferata was part of Homebuddies, a collaborative project by It’s Not A Box (the interdisciplinary performing arts company Cafferata is part of) and So.Glad Arts. Homebuddies was presented this August at Toronto's Lisgar Park / Evergreen Brick Works as part of the SummerWorks Performance Festival. More HERE.

Stir Vancouver collected all of the archive videos from Greater Vancouver Professional Theatre Alliance's annual Making A Scene programming, which included participation by SCA alumni Maiko Yamamoto, Derek Chan, Fay Nass, Tasha Faye Evans, Jeanette Kotowich, and Keely O'Brien. Hardy and Tedlie-Stursberg's Float

Evan Hardy and SCA alumnus Alex Tedlie-Stursberg have released Float, "a sculptural sound collaboration" produced using Tedlie-Stursberg's bronze sculptures made from "found marine wreckage" as a sound source. Listen HERE.

Residuals (住み・墨) on tour

SCA alumnus Shion Skye Carter is presenting Residuals (住み・墨) on September 30, 2024, at 6:30 PM at Halifax's Bus Stop Theatre (2203 Gottingen St.), presented as part of the Prismatic Arts Festival, and on October 5, 2024, at 7:30 PM at St. John's LSPU Hall (Resource Centre for the Arts – 3 Victoria St.), presented as part of the Festival of New Dance.
