Latta's busy summer

The SCA's Erika Latta has shared her summer 2024 plans with us, some possible because of being awarded funding, and they are extensive. Here's what's happening: WaxFactory (Latta and longtime collaborator Ivan Talijancic) are presenting Lulu XX on June 20 as a part of Midsummer Scene Festival in Dubrovnik, Croatia, with SCA MFA student Irfan Brkovic on video design. More HERE. While in Dubrovnik, WaxFactory are also running their Contemporary Performance Practice workshops from June 24 – July 6. More HERE. From June 23 – 27, Latta is "shadowing" director Matt Ross in Budapest, Hungary, as he works on the upcoming Netflix series, Death by Lightning. Next, Home / Land, a collaboration with Begat Theater and others, is running from July 8 – 20 as part of the Festival Villeneuve en Scène in Avignon, France. More HERE. From July 10 – 24, Latta and Talijancic (WaxFactory), SCA alumni Montserrat Videla Samper and Patrick Blenkarn, and composer Yiannis Christofides will be at Rose Bruford College in London, U.K., to develop a new devised work called POLARIS. Looking further into 2024, WaxFactory will have the world premiere of TRACES (after Sophie Calle), a site-specific immersive performance, video installation, and web project, at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, presented in support of the exhibition Sophie Calle: Overshare, which runs at the Walker from October 26, 2024 – January 26, 2025. Whew!

TPE celebrates in Montreal

Turning Point Ensemble, which has the SCA's Owen Underhill as conductor and Artistic Director, is performing on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at 7:30 PM in the Salle Pierre-Mercure at the Centre Pierre-Péladeau (300 Boul. de Maisonneuve E, Montréal), featuring works by Sandeep Bhagwati, Farangis Nurulla-Khoja, and Jocelyn Morlock. Maier down the Coast

The SCA's Stefan Maier is heading out on a mini US West Coast tour, playing the Chapel Performance Space (4649 Sunnyside Ave. N) in Seattle on May 30, the v i r t u a gallery (1317 Lloyd Center) in Portland on June 1, The Lab (2948 16th St.) in San Francisco on June 7, and Indexical (1050 River St., Studio #119) in Santa Cruz on June 6.

Slapstick Skool Spring Semester

The SCA's Steven Hill and Leaky Heaven Performance are running a Slapstick Skool Spring Semester. Info is otherwise limited, but the troupe requests that you DM them on Instagram if you're interested, particularly if you live in (or near?) the Stamps Place development (400 Campbell Ave., Vancouver).

Congratulations, Bergonzoni!

SCA alumnus Carolina Bergonzoni is a new Assistant Professor in the Department of Education at Cape Breton University.

Rahi on tour

SCA PhD student George Rahi shared the itinerary of an upcoming European "tour" with us: He'll be presenting frequencies, an installation work, at the Cultural Forum Swimming Pool at Plön Castle (Schloßgebiet 1, 24306 Plön, Germany) as part of the Frequenz Festival, which runs from May 26 – 29; he's performing on June 4 at Kunst-Station Sankt Peter (Leonhard-Tietz-Str. 6, 50676 Köln); and finally, he's giving a talk and performing on June 6 at Orgelpark's Interfaces Symposium (Gerard Brandtstraat 26, 1054 JK Amsterdam).

Sum plays Khatsahlano

SCA alumnus Amanda Sum is performing as part of the Khatsahlano Street Party, which runs Saturday, July 6, 2024, from 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM. More HERE.

SCA alumni Sena Cleave and Lauren Han are participating in Centre A Gallery's 2024 Art Writing Mentorship, facilitated by SCA alumnus Jacquelyn Zong-Li Ross. More HERE.

Ng's Touching Unseen Sound

SCA alumnus Silas Ng is presenting Touching Unseen Sound on Monday, June 17, 2024, with "sessions" from 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM and 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM at Lobe Studio (713 E Hastings St., Vancouver), presented with support from supported the Strathcona Spatial Sound Society and The James Black Gallery. The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra (VICO) with members of Little Giant Chinese Chamber Orchestra are performing works by SCA alumnus Rita Ueda, Farshid Samandari, Moshe Denburg, Jin Zhang, and Lan Tung on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at The Cultch's Historic Theatre (1895 Venables St., Vancouver), presented as part of VICO's Global Soundscapes Festival 2024. Stir on Soft tongues

Here's Stir Vancouver (read it HERE) on SCA alumnus Jami Reimer’s Soft tongues: a bioacoustic opera, running as part of Upintheair Theatre's rEvolver Festival (May 22 to June 2, 2024) at The Cultch, which has SCA alumni Czarina Agustines, Sara van Gaalen, Eve Middleton-Meyer, Lauren Han, and Ruby Maher as performers, and Mena El Shazly as co-Video Editor, Bernice Paet as Stage Manager, and Maddy Woodly as Assistant Stage Manager. Evans and Kotowich in Making a Scene

SCA alumni Tasha Faye Evans (who's giving a keynote) and Jeanette Kotowich are participating in the Greater Vancouver Professional Theatre Alliance's (GVPTA) annual Making a Scene programming, this time with the theme of "restoration & nourishment," which runs Monday, June 24, 2024, from 11:00 AM – 4:30 PM at the BMO Theatre Centre (162 West 1st Ave., Vancouver). The New Improvisers Studio

Lead by Shahzad Ismaily, SCA alumnus Matthew Ariaratnam joins the top-notch team of Sakina Abdou, Meredith Bates, Claire Devlin, Aviva Endean, Mili Hong, Sunny Kim, and Peggy Lee as invited guests participating in The New Improvisers Studio, "a free week-long educational initiative for up to twelve young musicians aged 17 to 24," presented by the Western Front and Coastal Jazz. Curated by SCA alumnus Ogheneofegor Obuwoma, the ...to glimpse: African Cinema Now! film series at the VIFF Centre (1181 Seymour St., Vancouver) continues with Rungano Nyoni's I Am Not a Witch on May 29 & 30 and concludes with Abba Makama's The Lost Okoroshi on June 20 & 22. More HERE.

To Map Alongside Belonging

SCA alumni Kaila Bhullar and Ogheneofegor Obuwoma join Luis Andrés Serrano and Monica Cheema as Gallery Gachet​'s 2024 BIPOC New Media Cohort for To Map Alongside Belonging. Each of them will produce a film that will be screened on June 9 at 7:00 PM as part of XINEMA's Home is an Artifact at the VIFF Centre (1181 Seymour St., Vancouver), and on June 10 as part of the will launch of Gallery Gachet’s community screen.

Gamboa's dama workshops

As part of her New Works' 2024 Summer Studio Artist Residency, presented in partnership with Out Innerspace, SCA alumnus Tin Gamboa is offering four free workshops on the voice and movement practice called dama on June 19, 20, 21 & 26, daily from 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM at Q7 (77 E 7th Ave., Vancouver). Vines seeking volunteers for Joining their Journeys

Vines Art Society (started as the Vine Arts Festival by SCA alumni and Artistic Director Heather Lamoureux) is co-hosting the exhibition Joining their Journeys, which is the next iteration of Honouring their Names: Indigenous Justice and Healing, July 8, 2024. The Vancouver Art Gallery shared the first in a set of videos featuring VAG Associate Curator and SCA alumnus Mandy Ginson on the exhibition HORIZONS, based on conceptual art project by Garry Neill Kennedy (1935–2021), which runs to August 25, 2024. Watch in on the VAG's Instagram.

SFU Students for Justice in Palestine

In an effort to get SFU to divest from its investments that feed into arms manufacturing, SFU Students for Justice in Palestine group have occupied SFU's Belzberg Library at Harbour Centre (515 W. Hastings St., Vancouver) and they're calling for supplies and support. More HERE.

Clala Project in Kyoto

SCA alumnus Tomoyo Yamada and Clala Project, which has SCA alumni Charlotte Telfer-Wan and Sam Mason as co-producers, are teaching a two-day workshop on August 3 & 4, 2024, at the Sakyo Tobu Ikiiki Center in Kyoto, Japan, as part of the 28th Kyoto International Dance Workshop Festival’s Pre-Programme series.
