Hill on the Shortlist

Congratulations to SCA alumnus Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill for making the shortlist for the 2023 Sobey Art Prize! With the exception of the eventual $100,000 winner, Hill and the other finalists will already also receive $25,000, and will all participate in an exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa from October 13, 2023, – March 3, 2024. Heart of Gold

Retired SCA faculty members Patricia Gruben and Martin Gotfrit have completed their feature film Heart of Gold, which has been nominated for three Leo (BC Film) Awards before its festival release – for screenplay, leading actress, and Gotfrit's musical score. Heart of Gold is a hybrid drama that explores the anti-war politics of 1968 in the U.S. and British Columbia. Several SCA alumni worked on the film, including cinematographer Devan Scott, editor Will Ross, sound recorder Ciaran Davis-McGregor, and Assistant Director Anthony Lee, along with a number of student interns. The Leo Awards will be announced on July 9, and Heart of Gold will be released in November. Good luck!

Infinity Yours on the road

The SCA's Miwa Matreyek is screening the documentation of Infinity Yours as part of WaveForms, "a multimedia art occurrence," on July 13, 2023, in the Mugar Omni Theater, "a five-story tall, 180-degree domed viewing environment," at Boston's Museum of Science (more HERE), and also at San Francisco's Exploratorium as part of After Dark: Ecological Futures on June 29 (more HERE) and as part of Natural Connection: The Environment and You on July 1 & 2, 2023 (more HERE).  

Introducing FCAT Research Spotlight

In a Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology Research Spotlight post (and part of the FCAT Research Newsletter, compiled by FCAT's Research Coordinator, Brendan Anderson), the SCA's James Long (Theatre Replacement) joins Gillian Russell (School of Interactive Arts + Technology), Siyuan Yin (School of Communication), and Am Johal (Co-Director of SFU's Community-Engaged Research Initiative and Director of SFU's Vancity Office of Community Engagement) to talk about "what pre-research looks like for them, and what's required to succeed in community engaged projects." Wilson in Queers in Space

SCA alumnus Wilson S. Wilson is part of the Queers in Space: Pride in Art Community Show, which runs June 19 – July 8, 2023, at The James Black Gallery (144 E. 6th Ave., Vancouver), presented as part of the Queer Arts Festival. More HERE.

ART ROCK SUMMER

SCA alumnus and current PhD student Casey Wei and the Libby Leshgold Gallery's Kay Higgins are co-curators of ART ROCK SUMMER: Summer School for Artists' Publishing, which runs June 16 – August 12, 2023, featuring a great schedule of events, including performances by Wei's rock group Kamikaze Nurse, SCA alumnus Katayoon Yousefbigloo's "amorphous rock cosplay" project Puzzlehead, and SCA alumnus Madison Mayhew's "synth-led prog rock power trio" Yep, plus so much more. More HERE.  

The Queen of Carthage

SCA alumnus Jessica McMann is one of the composers for The Queen of Carthage, a new collaboration between Re:Naissance Opera and Early Music Vancouver with SFU Woodward's Cultural Programs, that runs Thursday, July 27, 2023, at 8:00 PM in the Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre here at SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts (149 W. Hastings St., Vancouver), which also features SCA alumnus Marisa Gold as Choreographer and Dancer.

Vines' ecosystems

Vines Art Society​, begun as Vines Art Festival by SCA alumni and Artistic Director Heather Lamoureux, has launched their new "ecosystems" program, which they describe as "a multi-pronged approach to strengthening artist relations." Fine out more HERE.

Endless Summer ending

SCA alumni Katie Kozak and Lucien Durey's Endless Summer, presented as part of the Capture Photography Festival, ends its run at the Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art (2121 Lonsdale Ave., North Vancouver) tomorrow – Saturday, June 17, 2023. SCA alumnus DEBBY FRIDAY​ is on the 2023 Polaris Prize long list, and, according to the CBC, is also one of "9 2SLGBTQ+ Canadian musicians to listen to in 2023."

JOY OF JIGGING AND CONFLUENCE AT EVERGREEN

SCA alumnus Jeanette Kotowich​ is presenting a Joy of Jigging Workshop on Sunday, June 18, 2023, from 2:30 PM – 4:00 PM in the Rehearsal Hall at the Evergreen Cultural Centre​ (1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam). Also, Raven Spirit Dance​, which has SCA alumnus Starr Muranko as co-Artistic Director (with Michelle Olson) and Kotowich as an Artistic Associate, are presenting Confluence on Monday, June 19, at 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM in the Evergreen Cultural Centre's Studio Theatre.
