Welcome, Chambers!

We're very excited to announce that Justine A. Chambers is a new Assistant Professor in the Dance Area here at the SCA. As well as her deep, smart, sometimes irreverent, and well-established practice, Chambers also has an MFA from us. Find out more about Chambers and her practice HERE.

The Fold Virtual Book Launch

The SCA's Laura U. Marks is having a Virtual Book Launch via Zoom for The Fold: From Your Body to the Cosmos (Duke University Press​), which will also be the Inaugural Public Lecture for the Substantial Motion Research Network (SMRN), on Friday, July 19, 2024, starting at 9:00 AM (PDT), with moderation by SCA Postdoctoral Fellow Farshid Kazemi. Accelerator Lab International Fellows

SCA alumni Davey Samuel Calderon, Keely O'Brien, and Aryo Khakpour, and Kyle Loven (hey – why not check out our grad programs, Kyle?) were just-announced as the "cohort members" for Theatre Replacement's Accelerator Lab International Fellowship. Lum Talk

If you're in or around Toronto, SCA alumnus Ken Lum is giving an artist talk on July 9, 2024, from 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM at The Image Centre (Lecture Hall IMA-307 – 33 Gould St., Toronto), presented in support of Lum's Scotiabank Photography Award exhibition, which is at The Image Centre until August 3, 2024. Sum in Stir and at Green Auto

Here's Stir Vancouver on SCA alumnus Amanda Sum, who played July 4, 2024, at The Cultch to celebrate the launch of her new "suite" of songs, does it make me naive if i’ve never been part of something where i’ve meant more to them than they did to me? Stir also include Sum in their "Stir Cheat Sheet: 5 bands to search out at Khatsahlano Street Party," which runs all day on July 6. Read it HERE. Stir on Piece Lily

Here's Stir Vancouver on Odd Meridian Arts' Piece Lily, "an improvised mandala of movement, music and musings," devised and performed by SCA alumnus Marisa Gold, Ziyian Kwan, and Peggy Lee, with lighting design by SCA alumnus Jessica Han, which has the second half of its run from July 5 – 7, 2024, at 7:00 PM at Odd Meridian's Morrow (Unit 204 – 910 Richards St., Vancouver). Nass directs The Last of the Pelican Daughters

SCA alumnus Fay Nass is directing The Wardrobe Ensemble's The Last of the Pelican Daughters, set to run March 19 – 29, 2025, as part of UBC's Department of Theatre and Film's just-announced 2024/2025 Season. Once again, while we'd maybe like to announce a "season" like the good folks at UBC, our Theatre & Performance events (indeed, like virtually all of the events across the SCA) are devised, developed, and produced in real time and term-by-term. Caufield in Summer Splash

SCA alumnus Cori Caulfield is performing as part of Dances for a Small Stage's Summer Splash, which runs July 16 & 17, 2024, at Please Beverage (222 W 5th Ave., Vancouver). More HERE.

Sleuth at Green Auto

SCA alumni Jasper Lastoria and Oliver McTavish-Wisden are playing their "final(ish) show" as part of the "indiepop" group Sleuth, which they joined as third-year SCA students, on July 8, 2024, at Green Auto (1822 Pandora St., Vancouver), along with LA's Badlands and locals WUT and Non La. Calderon hosts The Show Will Go On

Ending Playwright Theatre Centre's Workshop Series 2024, SCA alumnus Davey Samuel Calderon (PTC's Dramaturg, Public Engagement) is presenting "The Show Will Go On: The Basics of Running a Smooth Event" on Friday, July 12, from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM, which runs online and at Progress Lab (1422 William St., Vancouver). Boombox triple bill

SCA alumni Kayla De Vos and Jae Woo Kang join Rhyan McCorkindale and Calder White for a  "triple bill" on July 17 – 19, 2024, at Boombox (44 W. 4th Ave., Vancouver), a performance space run by SCA alumnus Erika Mitsuhashi and Francesca Frewer and Sierra Megas. Follow Boombox on Instagram for more.

The Biting School workshops

As well as co-running the Physical Experiments in Theatre Making and Performance workshop on July 6 & 7, 2024, from 10:30 AM – 4:15 PM at hopbopshop (150 McLean Dr., Vancouver) as The Biting School (SCA alumnus Aryo Khakpour and Arash Khakpour), Arash Khakpour is also running the Bones, Perception and Imagination in Contact Improvisation workshop on Thursday, July 11, from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at EDAM Dance (303 E 8th Ave., Vancouver).  

Saugstad in Love-In’s Summer Festival

Presented as part of the Toronto Dance Community's Love-In’s Summer Festival, SCA alumnus Anya Saugstad is leading "Research/Methods" sessions from 11:45 AM – 12:45 PM and "Creation and Choreography" sessions from 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM, with both sets of sessions, from July 29 – August 2, 2024, at TRAC (35 Golden Ave Suite 108, Toronto). Vines' lineup

The Vines Art Society, founded by SCA alumnus and Vines Artistic Director Heather Lamoureux, has announced the lineup for the 10th Annual Vines Art Festival, which is running August 7 – 17, 2024, at various parks in so-called Vancouver. More HERE.

Kotowich at Bass Coast

SCA alumnus Jeanette Kotowich is holding a "Movement Healing" workshop as part of this year's Bass Coast (running July 12 – 15 in in Merritt, BC) on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 2:30 PM on the Slowtempo stage. While you're there, don't forget to see the SCA's Stefan Smulovitz and Hadis Fard's Tao of Phiel, "a collaborative interactive sound and visual art installation inspired by elephant communications." Soil to Stage Production Parties

SCA alumnus Barbara Adler, who's the Artistic Director of The Only Animal, is presenting a series of "Soil to Stage Production Parties" as part of The Only Animal's summer residency at The Sunshine Coast Arts Centre (5714 Medusa St., Sechelt, BC ). Submit to Horror in Seconds

Submissions are now open for the 2024 edition of Horror in Seconds, a festival dedicated to "60 seconds or less" horror shorts by emerging BIPOC filmmakers organized by SCA alumnus Doaa Magdy. See all of the details on the Horror in Seconds' FilmFreeway page.

The next free public event in Centre A’s 2024 Art Writing Mentorship, Writing is a Practice, a Vapour, a Many-Toed Thing (which is facilitated by SCA alumnus Jacquelyn Zong-Li Ross, with SCA alumni Sena Cleave and Lauren Han as participants), is Steff Hui Ci Ling on "Preambling the art workers' inquiry," on July 19, 2024, from 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM via Zoom.
