Dormitive Virtue

Encounter EDUCATIONAL MODERNISM

The SCA's Sabine Bitter and collaborators Helmut Weber and Jeff Derksen are having a book launch for Encounter EDUCATIONAL MODERNISM, the third in their Educational Modernism series (published by adocs Hamburg in cooperation with Edition Camera Austria, Graz), on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at 7:00 PM at Vienna Secession (Friedrichstraße 12, Vienna, Austria). Honouring A Long View

The SCA's Jin-me Yoon's 2017 photographic series, Long View, originally produced as part of LandMarks2017/Repères2017, has been expanded to become Honouring A Long View, now installed along the exterior South façade of the National Gallery of Canada until the spring of 2026. More HERE.

Chilemonos Vancouver

The SCA's Miwa Matreyek asked us to share about this upcoming Vancouver mini-version of Chilemonos, an animation festival from Santiago, Chile, running October 21 – 25, 2024, and featuring some free events: a screening of Our Present on Tuesday, October 22, at The Cinematheque (1131 Howe St., Vancouver); a screening of Our Stories on Wednesday, October 23, at UBC's Normand Bouchard Memorial Theatre (6138 Student Union Blvd #130, Vancouver); a workshop by Japanese animator and director Shin'ichirô Watanabe on Thursday, October 24, at Emily Carr University of Art + Design's Reliance Theatre (520 E 1st Ave., Vancouver); and the closing night screening of Our Voices, with a round table with filmmakers on Friday, October 25, at UBC Robson Square (800 Robson St., Vancouver). On the road with Blenkarn and Lim

Just received an update from SCA alumni and longtime collaborators Patrick Blenkarn and Milton Lim, creators of the "long form participatory performance" video game assess.masses, about their current activities. Here's what they've shared: they're in Berlin this fall and winter as artists in residence at the Humboldt Forum, where they are collaborating with a group of high school students to create new games and performances as part of Humboldting!; they're also touring theatres and festivals in Germany and Italy with asses.masses, which is premiering in German at Hebbel am Ufer in Berlin on October 26, followed by shows on November 10 and January 12 in Münster at Theater im Pumpenhaus; and they're taking assess.masses to Italy, where it premiered at Inteatro Festival in June 2024, to be presented on November 17 as part of the Campania Teatro Festival in Salerno, which also feattures Robert Wilson, Jan Fabre, and more. Whew!

Re-Centering/Margins Creative Residency

SCA alumni Natalie Tin Yin Gan, Tin Gamboa, Jeanette Kotowich, and Arash Khakpour are part of the team of mentors supporting the cohort for the Dance West Network's 2024 Re-Centering/Margins Creative Residency, which concludes with performances at the Surrey Arts Centre (13750 88 Ave., Surrey) on October 10 at 7:30 PM and at MORROW (Suite 204 – 910 Richards St., Vancouver) on October 12 at 3:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Bourget in The Big Tree

SCA alumnus Barbara Bourget and Jay Hirabayashi are providing dance / movement for Vancouver InterArts Collective's The Big Tree, "a provocative sixty minute structured improvisation that combines music, dance, soundscape, sung and spoken word, real-time visual art and creative lighting," with Brad Muirhead (project lead, trombone), DB Boyko (voice), Isaac Rosen-Purcell (clarinet/electronics), Stephen Robb (clarinet), Nick Apivor, and Gary Wideman (percussion), on Thursday, November 7, 2024, from 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM at the KW Production Studio (111 W. Maté wins the Sterling Prize in Support of Controversy

Congratulations to Dr. Gabor Maté, who was awarded the 2024 Nora and Ted Sterling Prize in Support of Controversy by SFU for his inspiring ongoing work on the links between trauma and health. The Prize honours and encourages work that provokes or contributes to the understanding of controversy. To celebrate the Prize, there will be a free lecture by Dr. Maté on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, from 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM, in the Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema here at 149 W. Hastings St., Vancouver (RSVP HERE). On the theme of trauma and health (and much more) that draws on Dr. Maté's own history as an "infant survivor of the Nazi genocide," here's a deeply-felt opinion piece he wrote in 2014 for the Toronto Star, titled "Beautiful dream of Israel has become a nightmare." Knight at the Libby

Our colleagues from another institution at the Libby Leshgold Gallery are hosting Autumn Knight as their Audain Distinguished Artist in Residence from October 1 – December 7, 2024. As part of Knight's residency, she'll be giving an Artist Talk on October 30 at 6:00 PM in the Reliance Theatre at Emily Carr University of Art + Design and a Performance on November 22 at 6:00 PM in the Libby (520 E 1st Ave., Vancouver). We're also fortunate to have Knight as one of the choreographers for The Middle of Everywhere, the upcoming SCA Repertory Dancers performance, running November 21 – 23, 2024, in the Fei & Milton Wong Experimental Theatre here at 149 W. SCA student Vanessa Lefan 樂凡 has released a new song, Did You See?, and collaborated with Zir Ziyadeh and Mona Al Kurdi on some related clothing to raise funds for Human Concern International and Project Olive Branch, which are both working to support the people of Gaza. More HERE.

SCA student Claine 'Gorgoth' Lamb has two upcoming events: Inferno III, "a spatialized auditory horror experience" based on Dante's Inferno, and a special spatialized playback of Kingdom of Misery by Lamb's band Misyrion, on October 26 at 6:00 PM and 8:30 PM at Lobe Studio (713 E. Hastings St., Vancouver), and a curated "double feature horror movie night," featuring Evil Dead (2013) at 7:00 PM and Army of Darkness (1992) at 9:00 PM, also at Lobe Studio.
