Tacata's Saturday Session

The SCA's Ryan Tacata is leading a Saturday Session for the Contemporary Art Gallery (555 Nelson St., Vancouver), on Zoe Leonard⁠'s exhibition View from Below (which runs to September 8, 2024) on July 27, 2024, starting at 12:00 PM. More HERE.

Amorphous Folk Collective at Leña

The SCA's Ben Rogalsky (who's also an SCA alumnus) and SCA alumnus Emmalena Fredriksson and the rest of the Amorphous Folk Collective (Bevan Bartlett, Dylan Brown, Natalie Davidson, Ailsa Mcfadyen, Jessica Keeling, and Corrina Keeling) are doing a week-long Leña Artist Residency on Galiano Island to research group singing, folk songs, and storytelling. While there, they'll also be holding a youth workshop on July 26, 2024, 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM and later performing, from 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM, at the Yellow House Art Centre (2517 Sturdies Bay Rd., Galiano Island), and participating in a writing workshop facilitated by Rosemary Georgeson.

Slip Slap Trip Wack

The SCA's Steven Hill and Leaky Heaven Performance are presenting the world premiere of Slip Slap Trip Wack, a "family-friendly work" that "brings to life the imaginative worlds of 8–12-year-olds," from July 26 – 28, 2024, at the Russian Hall (600 Campbell Ave., Vancouver). More HERE.

Vancouver Art Book Fair

Publication Studio Vancouver (the SCA's Kay Higgins and Kathy Slade), The Capilano Review (which has SCA alumni Jacquelyn Zong-Li Ross as Art Editor), Gallery Gachet (which has SCA alumnus Olumoroti Soji-George as Artistic Director), ReIssue (which is edited by SCA PhD student Casey Wei), and our friends SFU Galleries are all participating in the Vancouver Art Book Fair, which runs July 26 & 27, 2024, at the Roundhouse Art & Recreation Centre (181 Roundhouse Mews, Vancouver). Town + Country: Narratives of Property and Capital

SCA alumnus Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill is part of the exhibition Town + Country: Narratives of Property and Capital, which is running at both the Kamloops Art Gallery (from July 20 – September 21, 2024 – more HERE) and then the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery (from January 10 – April 13, 2025 – more HERE).  

Panaclásica

SCA alumnus Mar Alzamora, Fernando Bustos, and Pablo Bas have launched Panaclásica, a new "documentary podcast about the history of Classical Music in Panama." Listen HERE (in Spanish).

Rumble Theatre have reminded us that Veronique West's Szepty/Whispers, which includes SCA alumni Caroline MacCaull, Sammy Chien, Cindy Mochizuki, David Mesiha, and Jack Chipman as part of the production team, is available to watch for free via their Rumble On-Demand service. Watch it HERE.

On The Tempest Project

Here's Pancouver (read it HERE) and the Vancouver Sun (read it HERE) on Music on Main's The Tempest Project, which runs July 17 – 22, 2024, at the Vancouver Playhouse (600 Hamilton St., Vancouver), which includes SCA alumnus Nancy Tam as sound designer and one of the composers.  

Tender City: The Silent Slow Dance

Here's a call for participants from SCA MFA student Kevin Jesuino:

Kevin Jesuino invites gay, bi, and trans men to participate in his socially engaged dance project, Tender City: The Silent Slow Dance, as part of his MFA graduating project this summer. Through public silent slow dancing, this project explores the histories of cruising, male tenderness, and urban alienation. There are various activities to join, including a workshop in partnership with the Health Initiative for Men (HIM). For more information and to get involved, please visit this form.

SCA alumni Ogheneofegor Obuwoma and Michelle Sound are part of the exhibition It begins with knowing and not knowing, which opens (with a tour and reception) on Saturday, July 20, from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM, at the Richmond Art Gallery (7700 Minoru Gate, Richmond), and runs to September 29, 2024. Also, Obuwoma is hosting a free, online "Artist Salon" in support of the exhibition on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, from 7:00 PM – 8:15 PM at the RAG. More HERE.
