Slade and Robertson in conversation
The SCA's Kathy Slade is having a free public conversation with poet and writer Lisa Robertson on January 31, 2023, at 6:00 PM in support of Slade's exhibition exhibition, As the sun disappears and the shadows descend from the mountaintop, which presents "a new body of work rooted in a research trip to Sils Maria, Switzerland, where Friedrich Nietzsche spent the majority of his summers during the decade he wrote his most enduring work," running January 27 – May 7, 2023, at the Contemporary Art Gallery (555 Nelson St., Vancouver). London's The Photographers' Gallery is hosting a Small File Photo Festival: Talks Programme on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at 2:00 PM (UK time!), featuring the SCA's Laura U. PushOff 2023: Emergent Realities
Running January 30 – February 4, 2023, with some events in-person at The Russian Hall (600 Campbell Avenue, Vancouver) and some online, PushOff 2023: Emergent Realities, co-presented by Theatre Replacement, Company 605, and Fascinator Management, features New Age Attitudes: Live in Concert by alumnus Amanda Sum, Kisiskâciwan by alumnus Jeanette Kotowich, Infinitely Yours by the SCA's Miwa Matreyek, and in-development works by alumni Adrienne Wong, Natalie Tin Yin Gan, and Luciana Freire D'Anunciação.

Forgiveness is having its World Premiere from January 12 – February 12, 2023, at the Arts Club Theatre Company's Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage (2750 Granville Street, Vancouver), a joint production with Theatre Calgary, who will be presenting the show from March 7 – April 1, 2023. The Five Blessings Collective's A Year of Blessings
As we head towards the Lunar New Year on Sunday, January 22, 2023, and enter the year of the Rabbit, enjoy A Year of Blessings, an audio play series by the Five Blessings Collective, which includes SCA alumni Derek Chan, Howard Dai, and Nancy Tam, and Jasmine Chen and Robyn Jacob, produced in collaboration with SCA alumnus Amanda Sum, and presented by Gateway Theatre. Mochizuki's Autumn Strawberry (Dance Film)
Concluding a multi-year, multi-part arc, the Surrey Art Gallery (13750 88 Ave.) is presenting SCA alumnus Cindy Mochizuki's Autumn Strawberry (Dance Film), a "multilayered artwork" that grew out of her 2021 exhibition Autumn Strawberry and a two-month residency in 2019, from December 9, 2022, – April 30, 2023. A book is also forthcoming about the work this spring, "with essays by Namiko Kunimoto and Cindy Mochizuki and interviews with choreographer Lisa Mariko Gelley and composer Nancy Tam," who's also an SCA alumnus. The Gallery will be celebrating Autumn Strawberry (Dance Film) and their other winter exhibitions on January 21, 2023, from 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM.

Natalie Brett Quartet's Standards
SCA alumnus and multidisciplinary artist Carol Sawyer has released Standards, an LP with her band the Natalie Brett Quartet, featuring Sawyer on vocals, Lisa Cay Miller on piano, Clyde Reed on bass, and Kenton Loewen drums. Inspired by an ongoing visual art project about Natalie Brettschneider, a fictional character Sawyer invented to challenge the ways art history has downplayed the contributions of women, the LP explores what Natalie Brettschneider’s brief flirtation with mainstream jazz in the 1940’s and 1950’s might have sounded like. Featuring SCA alumni Amanda Sum, Shion Skye Carter, Anya Saugstad, and Eowynn Enquist, SCA alumnus Stefan Nazarevich's "visual" album ARCMAPS, released under the name SAN, is streaming now live via arcmaps.world, and will be available on your preferred streaming platform on January 13, 2023. And good news / bad news: The album release party is tonight – Friday, January 13 at 8:00 PM at 369 Carrall Street, Vancouver – but it's already sold out!
