Happy Birthday, Jasper Rose

As we head into the long weekend (the SCA will be closed Monday, July 1, 2024), we'd like to wish Jasper Rose – the "best friend" of SCA's Ryan Tacata who, like a very good dog, made a guest appearance in Tacata's recent talk as part of the Bonnie Sherk symposium on on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at the Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture in San Francisco – a very happy birthday!

Model Is the Message launched

The SCA's Judy Radul, Daniel Young, Reza Negarestani, Rodolfo Sousa Ortega, Romulo Moraes, and editor Mohammad Salemy celebrated the launch of the new anthology, Model Is the Message, produced by the Richmond Art Gallery, The New Centre for Research & Practice, and &&& Books, on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at the Or Gallery (236 E. Tao of Phiel

The SCA's Stefan Smulovitz and Hadis Fard are presenting Tao of Phiel, "a collaborative interactive sound and visual art installation inspired by elephant communications," at the 2024 edition of Bass Coast, which runs July 12 – 15 in Merritt, BC. More HERE.

Jesuino's Slow Dance Project

As part of his grad work, SCA MFA student Kevin Jesuino is seeking volunteers – self-identifying gay, bi, queer and/or trans-males between the ages of 19-99 living in Vancouver or surrounding communities – to participate in his Slow Dance Project, which is a "creative inquiry/study on male intimacy in public and private urban spaces." Off Script video

Next up in Playwright Theatre Centre's Workshop Series 2024 is SCA alumni Heidi Taylor (PTC's Artistic & Executive Director) leading "Mapping a Creative Project: Out of your head and into the world" on Wednesday, July 3, from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM at Progress Lab (1422 William St., Vancouver). SCA alumnus Davey Samuel Calderon (PTC's Dramaturg, Public Engagement) finishes the series with "The Show Will Go On: The Basics of Running a Smooth Event" on Friday, July 12, from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM, which runs online and at Progress Lab. Grapefruit girl aesthetic

Transient Rhythms call

Transient Rhythms, "an exhibition that speaks to the history, impact and perseverance of DIY music and art spaces in Vancouver," isn't an SCA-related project (it's by Claudia Goulet-Blais and Jefferson Alade, who are MFA students at Emily Carr University of Art + Design), but perhaps some SCA folks might want to answer their call for works. SCA alumnus Barbara Adler, who's the Artistic Director of The Only Animal, is presenting a "rotating program of media and textile works" (including excerpts from Koiker, which you can see a sample of HERE) in the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre's gallery’s "alcove" from June 22 – August 18, 2024, presented as part of Adler's summer residency at the Centre (5714 Medusa St., Sechelt, BC), which includes a few more upcoming events, as well.
