2024 SCA Scholarships & Awards winners!
Congratulations to all of the recipients of SCA Scholarships & Awards in 2024, including Diana de Leyssac and Carissa Toledo (Steven Shane Scholarships), Marita Michaelis (Alderson Interarts Award in the School for the Contemporary Arts), Emily Yen Chi Lee (Brian Taylor Award in Dance), Toni-Leah C. Yake and Jack Blanco (Bill Jeffries Award for Indigenous Students in the Arts), Oliver Fusio (Ker Wells Memorial Award), Liam Murley, Samira Banihashemi (سمیرا بنی هاشمی), and Kepei Zheng (Bice Caple Awards), and Tadeo Ríos Dávila and Bethlehem Mulat (School for the Contemporary Arts Scholarship). SCA FCAT Excellence Awards Winners!
The SCA cleaned up at the 2024 FCAT Excellence Awards, which were presented on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, in the Djavad Mowafaghian World Art Centre here at our place, including recipients Kelvin Redvers (Alum of the Year), Lorna Brown (Distinguished Alumni), Stefan Smulovitz (Impact Award), Matthew Horrigan (Teaching Assistant or Tutor Marker Teaching Award), Kathy Slade (Sessional Instructor and Term Faculty Award), Nadia Shihab (Early Career Teaching Award), Arne Eigenfeldt (Distinguished Researcher), and Brady Cranfield (Career Contributions Award), which is me, plus a number of other well-deserving non-SCA receipients, as well.
Higgins edited The Undesirables
The SCA's Kay Higgins, our Professional Development Coordinator, edited The Undesirables, a just-released collaboration between Myfanwy MacLeod and Lisa Robertson, published by Emily Carr University Press, and available at Read Books (and soon via Art Metropole). More HERE.
Town + Country: Narratives of Property and Capital
SCA alumnus Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill is part of the exhibition Town + Country: Narratives of Property and Capital, which opens Thursday, January 9, 2025, from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, and running from January 10 – April 13, 2025 (following its run at the Kamloops Art Gallery from July 20 – September 21, 2024). O'Callaghan's workshop
SCA alumnus James O'Callaghan is running a hands-on, Zoom-based workshop series, limited to 10 participants, in January & February, 2025, focusing on "mixing skills in electroacoustics, electronic dance music, sound design, or acoustic recordings." Find out more HERE.
Yassine's Seeing Double
Pancouver interviewed SCA alumnus Ghinwa Yassine about her new project, Seeing Double, "an apocalyptic reading/storytelling performance/auditory experience that blends fact and fiction, and is heartwarming, heartbreaking, and chaotic," co-created with Dramaturg and Rehearsal Director (and SCA alumnus) Aryo Khakpour, on Saturday, December 14, 2024, from 7:00 PM – 8:40 PM, with a "talkback with the artistic team," at Odd Meridian Arts' Morrow (Suite 204 – 910 Richards St., Vancouver). Saadatpajouh leads NWXR 2025
SCA MFA student Avideh Saadatpajouh, who's also New Works' XR Program Coordinator for 2025, shared with us that the call for participation in NWXR 2025: Beyond the Stage, "a seven-week journey of interdisciplinary workshops exploring text, movement, senses, and technology," is now open, with a deadline of Friday, December 20, 2024. SCA alumnus Mena El Shazly, who's the Artistic Director of Cairo Video Festival, curated Freak of Screen, the 11th edition of Cairo Video Festival for video art and experimental film, running December 1 – 17, 2024, which includes works by Kristen Roos, SCA MFA student Liz Oakley, and SCA alumni Billy Marchenski, Inanna Cusi, and Rashi Sethi. According to Stir Vancouver, Vancouver City Council has approved a motion to relocate SCA alumnus Ken Lum’s popular Monument to East Vancouver "to a more accessible and visible spot." More HERE.
