Audain Gallery, 149 W. Hastings St., Vancouver
This exhibition presents the work of visual art students graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University.
Jessica Chu, Danni Gárate Cubillos, Kayla Elderton, Megan Fillo, Aghigh Gougani, Andi Icaza-Largaespada, A Yeong Kim, Carolina Krawczyk, Jilann Lechner, Cindy Liu, Clara Liu, Betty Ma, Emily Marston, Sana Sayahpour, Feon Yeung, Nico Yu, and Jaromir Zelazny.
The exhibition Lazy Susan explores the BFA graduating class' shared experience of thinking about and making art. A "Lazy Susan", formerly known as the "Revolving Server", is a stationary rotating tray that is used for sharing food around a large round table, which enables people to serve themselves, and circulate food to others.
The precise origin of the name "Lazy Susan" is unknown, yet speculative etymologies often reference domestic servitude, suggesting that the introduction of the mechanism allowed for a more democratic relationship between server and served.
As a metaphor, "Lazy Susan" proposes a common platform that supports the artworks that the BFA students have developed through engaging in critical thinking and making together. Just as the "Lazy Susan" passes items around, they've circulated concepts and forms that have transformed through their rotation.
