On Friedenberg's Pants
Read Pancouver (HERE), Stir Vancouver (HERE), and The Georgia Straight (HERE) on SCA alumnus and now MFA student Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg's Pants, which is running January 17 – 20, 2024, at the Firehall Arts Centre (280 E. HOLD ON LET GO
Running in two parts (PART I from January 23 – 27 and PART II from January 30 – February 2, 2024) at The Russian Hall (600 Campbell St., Vancouver), the programming for Theatre Replacement and Company 605's HOLD ON LET GO, formerly known as PushOFF, includes great SCA representation: Amy Amantea and the SCA's James Long's Through My Lens, has alumni Sophie Tang on Lighting and Set Design and Daniel O’Shea on Technical Direction; Hong Kong Exile’s HEAVEN FM was created by alumni Natalie Tin Yin Gan, Alex Mah, and Kaylee Louie; Mardon + Mitsuhashi's whereverever has alumnus Erika Mitsuhashi as a co-creater and perfomer, with alumni Jaewoo Kang on Costume Design and Jack Chipman as Technical Manager; SpiderWebShow Performance's SmartSmart is directed and performed by alumni Adrienne Wong; alumni Keely O'Brien is giving an In-Development Presentation of Secret Ingredients; Theatre Replacement's Best Life was conceived, directed, and performed by alumnus Maiko Yamamoto, and co-created by Yamamoto and alumni O’Brien and Arthi Chandra, plus with alumnus O’Shea as Technical Consultant; and Company 605's lossy (excerpts) has the SCA's Justine A. Chambers on Wardrobe Design and alumnus Antonio Somera Jr. as a performer. The SCA's Young Joo Lee is part of the exhibition 손맛 Sonmat, curated By Dahn Gim, which runs January 23 – March 3, 2024, at Gage & Christensen Galleries (610 22nd Ave. S, Minneapolis). More HERE.
Moving Matter in NYC
Moving Matter, a short film created by the SCA's Rob Kitsos and SCA alumni Beau Han Bridge and Meagan Woods, and featuring the SCA's Erika Latta and SCA alumni Anna Wang Albini, Sydney Bluck, Olivia Johnson, Desiree James, Brett Palaschiuk, Alexandra Caprara, and Max Tyler-Hite is having its World Premiere on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at 8:15 PM in the Francesca Beale Theater at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (70 Lincoln Center Plaza, New York City), presented as part of the shorts program, Provocative Perspectives, at the Dance on Camera Festival, running February 9 – 12, 2024. Hamm talks Ligeti
Stir Vancouver interviewed pianist Corey Hamm in advance of Turning Point Ensemble's (which has the SCA's Owen Underhill as Artistic Director and conductor) upcoming Chamber Concerto with Fabián Panisello at the Annex (823 Seymour St., Vancouver) on January 12 & 13, 2024, at which Hamm is performing Gyorgi Ligeti’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. ReIssue Art Writing Contest
The deadline for the ReIssue Art Writing Contest from ReIssue, the "interdisciplinary art writing platform" edited by SCA PhD student Casey Wei, is coming. Here's the call:
"Open to emerging art writers enrolled in our partnering institutions: SFU, UBC, ECU, and Langara College — eligible students are invited to submit their writing for a cash prize of $1500, and publication of the winning piece online and in our upcoming Year 3 Anthology.
The call is open to students in undergraduate and graduate programs, in and beyond the art department. Submissions should be 3000 words maximum, and fit within ReIssue’s categories of Review, Interview, Moving Image, Essay, or Creative. Upon selection, the successful applicant will work with ReIssue Editor Casey Wei to polish up the piece for publication following Reissue’s style guidelines (available as a PDF on our ‘About’ page).
The deadline to submit is February 1, 2024, with the winner selected by March 1."

1000xRESIST, the video game developed by SCA alumnus Remy Siu and the Sunset Visitor 斜陽過客 crew and their collaborators, including a bunch of other SCA alumni – Natalie Tin Yin Gan, Conor Wylie, Maiko Yamamoto, Felicia Lau, Amanda Sum, Anjela Magpantay, June Fukumura, Mahaila Patterson-O'Brien, Erika Mitsuhashi, and Alex Mah – is nominated for three Independent Games Festival Awards, including the grand prize!
