A Three Part Series with Shion Skye Carter

In this portfolio website workshop, participants will learn the key skills needed to set up their own artist presence online, with a focus on designing the portfolio through a free website-building platform. Along with learning technical elements such as designing a website layout and inserting links, photos, and videos, the workshop will cover how to effectively write an artist biography, artist statement, and descriptions of art projects for portfolios, CVs, and applications (residencies, festivals, grants). This workshop is open to students of all artistic disciplines.
Participating students are recommended to bring a notebook, writing utensils, and a USB or hard drive with some artist headshots and/or photos of their work to practice incorporating into their website. Students are also asked to set up an account on www.tumblr.com prior to the first workshop day, with a blank webpage ready to be transformed into an artist portfolio. No previous web design or coding experience is required.

Biography
Shion Skye Carter is a dance artist originally from Tajimi, Japan, and based in Vancouver, Canada. Through choreography hybridized with calligraphy, video, and sculptural objects, her work celebrates the intersection of her ethnographic and queer identities, in connection with her heritage. As co-founder of olive theory, an interdisciplinary duo with musician Stefan Nazarevich, she collaborates to experiment at the intersection between embodied performance, installation art, and live sound. In both her independent work and as olive theory, Shion has performed across Canada and worked as artist-in-residence at What Lab and Left of Main in Vancouver, as well as LEÑA Artist Residency on Galiano Island, BC. Her recently produced short films have been screened at festivals globally, including Dancing on the Edge Festival (Canada), Festival of Recorded Movement (Canada), Dance Days Chania (Greece), and Moving Images Dance Festival (Cyprus). As a performer, she has interpreted the works of artists such as Anya Saugstad, Vanessa Goodman (Action at a Distance), Ziyian Kwan (Dumb Instrument Dance), and Wen Wei Dance. She holds a BFA in Dance and Kinesiology from Simon Fraser University, and is the 2021 recipient of the Iris Garland Emerging Choreographer Award.
In the realm of website-building and design, Shion is self-taught and created her first artist portfolio website during her time as a student at SFU. Inspired by her father who is a web designer by trade, Shion focuses on using affordable, DIY methods to build websites that help establish a professional artist presence online. She has spent the last three years helping other emerging artists build their websites, with a particular interest in supporting students in post-secondary art programs who are preparing to move forward into their professional careers.

About Art Skills
Art Skills combines mutual support and training to create collaboration between contemporary arts students, community partners and SFU's School for the Contemporary Arts, providing real world experience and skills development. A Fall SCA Professional Practice series offers additional learning opportunities for students to gain skills they can practice hands-on in internships, practicums and field placements. At the end of the project, students will share what they have learned by participating in a Community Skills Share. The goal of this project is to create a legacy that can support future students.
