Congratulations to Daniel and Francis

Congratulations to the SCA's Dr. Henry Daniel and his co-applicant Dr. June Francis from SFU's Beedie School of Business for being awarded funding from Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)'s New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF), which "supports world-leading interdisciplinary, international, high-risk / high-reward, transformative and rapid-response Canadian-led research."

Titled "Black Creativity in the Arts, Sciences, Technology and Business," and presented as a constructive, creative challenge to "the culture of White Supremacy" that is widely predominate in Canada and elsewhere, Daniel and Francis' proposed research "seeks to inspire a radical shift in the thinking that supports the current system of inequity, maintains structural racism, and prevents a redefining of Blackness through Black lenses."

They propose a six part plan for their work that includes:

  • the formation of a Black Caucus at SFU;
  • the building of "transdisciplinary links between the sciences, arts, technology, business, and the humanities";
  • the creation of a collaborative "multi-city case study" to comparatively survey current institutional conditions in terms of Black people’s health and the effects of racism and the consequences of transhistorical trauma;
  • the organization of an "international conference / symposium" that invites Black scholars and experts to critically discuss institutional life and the outcome of the comparative study, while proposing "ways of dealing with these complex issues";
  • the creation of a large-scale "artistic performance work in real and virtual environments that draws attention to these issues while initiating a larger discussion of them to coincide with the conference / symposium";
  • and finally, the publication of "a report on this conference / symposium" to share with "the wider Black community locally, nationally, and internationally," which itself will "form the basis for a larger and more comprehensive study at a later date."

We can't wait to see this excellent plan come into full action.

Congratulations again, Henry and June!
