Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema, SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts
RSVP to the SCA's Welcome! Orientation HERE
(Please make sure to select enough tickets for you and your family and friends – who are welcome! – if they're also attending.)
Are you going to be new to the SCA this fall semester?
Please join us for a crash-course introduction to the School for the Contemporary Arts at SFU. With Dance, Film, Music & Sound, Theatre Performance, Theatre Production & Design, Visual Art, and Art, Performance & Cinema Studies, plus all of the other spaces, resources, and opportunities here at the SCA, we have a lot of interrelated parts to cover and get to know.
The event will begin with a series of quick presentations from Elspeth Pratt (SCA Associate Professor & Director), Dean Lastoria (SCA New Students Advisor), Alex Brzezinski (SCA Undergraduate Advisor), and other SCA staff, followed by a roundtable discussion (titled Entangled Life) with Wladimiro A. Woyno R (SCA Assistant Professor) and Samantha Walters (SCA student), and then students will break into to groups for a tour of the Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, lead by representatives from the SCA student unions.
Please RSVP to the invite, which was sent to all new SCA students' contact emails – and don't forget to check your 'spam' and 'junk' folders! If you're a new SCA student and you didn't receive the invite, please contact ca@sfu.ca.
Even better, we also have a surprise gift for all new SCA students. Make sure to RSVP to ensure you'll receive yours!
Parents and guardians are also welcome!
We look forward to seeing you all there!
Small Group Hive Session, FCAT Welcome, and BBQ
Before our Welcome! Orientation event, SFU's Student Services and the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology (FCAT) have organized HIVE (Home for Interactive and Virtual Engagement) breakout rooms for all incoming students who are totally new to SFU. Connected to SFU 101, a free online course for all new SFU students to provide "information about welcome events and programs, SFU culture and student life, and tips for academic success," SFU describes the HIVE Program as "a virtual community where you can make new friends, learn new things, and have fun."
Information about SFU 101 and the HIVE Program will have been emailed to you directly from SFU Student Services, including everything you'll need to know in order to participate in these breakout rooms, which will include a welcome video from SFU's Student Services and "ice breaker" activities. After these HIVE sessions, students will all come together in the SCA's Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema (which is on the third floor of SFU's Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, the SCA's main home at 149 West Hastings Street in Vancouver) for a welcoming and information session from FCAT, which is the faculty that the SCA is part of at SFU.
This portion of the morning ends with a free BBQ lunch, courtesy SFU's Student Services and FCAT, on the SCA's outdoor patio on the second floor of SFU's Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, which will be followed by the SCA's Welcome! Orientation event at 2:00 PM.
Schedule
- HIVE Breakout rooms – 10:30 AM (students will have received their HIVE group's room number from their HIVE Leader)
- SFU Welcome Day Video – 11:20 AM (Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema)
- FCAT Welcome Session – 11:30 AM (Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema)
- BBQ – 12:00 PM (Second floor patio – SFU's Goldcorp Centre for the Arts)
- SCA Welcome! Orientation – 2:00 PM (Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema)
NOTE: The HIVE sessions, FCAT Welcoming, and BBQ have been organized by SFU's Student Services and the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology. If you have any questions or concerns about this portion of the day's events, please reach out to your HIVE Leader. For questions about the SCA's Welcome! Orientation, please contact Dean Lastoria, the SCA's New Students Advisor, at scanew@sfu.ca.
