CMA Journal – Issue Ten: Enchantment, Disenchantment, Reenchantment

Read Issue Ten: Enchantment, Disenchantment, Reenchantment of the SCA's open-access, peer-reviewed Comparative Media Arts Journal, edited by SCA PhD candidate Yani Kong. Responding to "a sociological tradition that is reactive to the advance of industrialism at the beginning of the twentieth century," a tradition that runs, for example, from Max Weber to the Frankfurt School to the Postmodernism of the 1980s, Issue Ten: Enchantment, Disenchantment, Reenchantment includes essays and works by Cristina Albu, SCA alumni Dave Biddle, Elvira Hufschmid, Ella Tetrault, Martabel Wasserman, Shalon T. Sounds' Seventies Mama

SCA alumni Michelle Sound is currently using the Fazakas Gallery's Downtown Vancouver pop-up gallery at 850 Granville Street, Vancouver, as temporary studio space, working on "a series of drums titled 'Seventies Mama' that celebrates the style of her mom and aunties when they were young mothers in the 1970s." Lee at Griffin Art Projects

Ng's Touching Unseen Sound

SCA MFA student Silas Ng will be presenting Touching Unseen Sound: Spatial Sound Sessions, developed in collaboration with SCA MFA student Jami Reimer and Edo Van Breemen, Sean Evans, and Alex Penney in and for the Lobe Spatial Sound Studio. The show runs August 6 & 7 and 13 & 14, 2021, at various times. Tickets are $15-30 (suggested donation). More HERE.

Yamamoto's "soothing voice"

Read a review of the Electric Company Theatre's The Magic Hour: An Immersive Theatrical Experience, which features the "soothing voice" of Maiko Yamamoto, who's an SCA alumni and co-founder (with SCA alumni James Long) of Theatre Replacement. Read it HERE.

The Cultch's collaborative online programming East Van to Edinburgh (August 8 – 28, 2021), developed with Richard Jordan Productions and ZOO Venues in Edinburgh, includes do you want what i have got? a craigslist cantata, which features SCA alumni Amanda Sum, and a performance by the "multi-disciplinary, non-binary drag performance collective" The Darlings, which includes SCA dance alumni Desi Rekrut, whose stage-name is P.M.. Lim and Blenkarn's [arcade.asinus]

SCA alumni Milton Lim and Patrick Blenkarn's just concluded a residency at VIVO Media Arts Centre to work on their [arcade.asinus] project, Here's the project brief from Lim: "It’s an arcade installation that combines documentary and video game aesthetics and design languages. It engages with contemporary geopolitics, digital labour, and the obsolescence of the manual labourer through the lens of the donkey." Check back HERE for updates.

Hsu and Lane work The Tempest

SCA Theatre Production & Design students June Hsu (sound designer) and Megan Lane (set & props designer) are working on Carousel Theatre for Young People's presentation of The Tempest, running July 31 to August 7, 2021, as part of their Teen Shakespeare Program. More HERE.

Kotowich, Shaffer, Geremia's multidisciplinary intensive

SCA alumni Jeanette Kotowich and Olivia Shaffer and expressive arts therapist Julie Geremia are running a "multidisciplinary intensive" on Lasqueti Island, BC. Here's the basic info and cost: "Arrive on Sunday, Aug. 15 in the afternoon for orientation. This intensive begins on Mon, Aug 16 morning at 10am. Depart on Sat, Aug21 at 8am or 11am ferries. $600 includes all meals, camping/dormitory, tuition, taxes, and transportation from the ferry." More HERE.
