Rest in Peace, R. Murray Schafer

We’re very saddened to hear of the passing of composer and educator R. Murray Schafer on August 14, 2021. As part of the Centre for Communications and the Arts, Schafer was fundamental in the pre-history of the School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University. Along with his significant body of musical work and his writing (visit Arcana Editions for an overview), including 1977’s important The Tuning of the World (republished in 1993 as The Soundscape: Our Sonic Environment and the Tuning of the World), Schafer was also central to the development of the widely influential World Soundscape Project (along with Bruce Davis, Peter Huse, Barry Truax, Howard Broomfield, and Hildegard Westerkamp), which has helped the growth of the wider field of sound studies internationally.
