CAG Prize 2021: Vitória Monteiro and Aynaz Parkas

The School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University and the Contemporary Art Gallery are pleased to announce the winners of the 2021 CAG Prize! This year it is a tie! The CAG Prize was awarded to Vitória Monteiro and Aynaz Parkas, two of our exceptional Visual Art students whose work is currently included in the BFA Graduating Exhibition 2021: Supercharged.

The CAG Prize is adjudicated by the Contemporary Art Gallery and is awarded yearly to an outstanding BFA student upon completion of their program of study in Visual Art at the SCA. The Prize entails a four-week self-directed residency in CAG's North Gallery space, providing the recipient with a stipend, studio space, and support to further develop their practice as well as the opportunity to expand their connections to a wider arts community in Vancouver. Over the course of the residency, the recipient will have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with artists and curators about their practice, build on their professional skills, and gain insight into the framework of a public art gallery. This year the award is being offered to two students, therefore each will receive separate residencies to be scheduled within the next 12 months.

Congratulations to Vitória Monteiro and Aynaz Parkas!

Photos Without Faces

It’s here! The SCA music + sound’s hybrid ensemble Photos Without Faces just released their self-titled album. Available on Spotify, Apple Music and iTunes.

In the endlessly descending twilight, our interactions flat and vacant – then static roars. Paradigms are dragged from chaos and dissonance until a new form of communication emerges. In the residue of our old way of being, we can’t see faces, but we can feel intention. We step away from memories and come together, forging thoughts in digital spaces.

Photos Without Faces is Alex Abahmed, Daniel Blackie, Aysha Dulong, Rodrigo Diaz Nieto, Nick Savoie, Rohini Soedhwa, Da Yun Stella Song, Pascal Fengler, Toni-Leah C. Yake, and Emmanuel (Will) Zorzos. During the throes of the Covid-19 pandemic, Photos Without Faces had the unique opportunity to meet in person for 2 months in a classroom setting. Guided by Mauricio Pauly, Photos Without Faces jammed and created a unique hybrid sound using a variety of instruments and techniques. Eventually, it was time to recede behind Zoom to produce an album from a distance.

Photos Without Faces draws on the simultaneous and paradoxical isolation and new connectivity that its members found during the brief time they were able to spend together. Listen HERE.
