Union of Professional Health and Care Sector Workers in Nepal (UNIPHIN)
UNIPHIN is a trade union federation representing care sector workers in Nepal with about 30 hospitals/enterprise-based unions and more than 9,000 members.
UNIPHIN's history
UNIPHIN was established after ten years of struggle, with close support and cooperation from UNI NLC. This national trade union federation, representing both private and public hospital and health care workers, was established in 2015 and named the Union of Professional Health and Care Sector Workers in Nepal (UNIPHIN).
UNIPHIN is still a new organization, with bigger ambitions such as:
- becoming the national federation representing all private hospital health care workers in Nepal;
- providing health care workers with the nationwide network to be recognized as the counterpart of social dialogue by the employer’s association and the government;
- and enabling health care workers to acquire legitimate power by increasing membership to exercise influence on policy-making related to the health care sector and private hospitals.
As such, UNIPHIN is expanding widely, working upon health care workers’ rights and encouraging affilations with enterprises.
UNIPHIN's mission
UNIPHIN is dedicated to the welfare of care sector workers in Nepal, which undertook significant initiatives through trade unions to enhance the working conditions and rights of its members. UNIPHIN, representing the interests of care sector workers, engaged in constructive negotiations with employers to secure improved wages and better working conditions. The organization, in collaboration with trade unions, advocated for the rights of care workers, focusing on issues such as job security, gender equality, and workplace safety. UNIPHIN played a pivotal role in raising awareness among care sector workers about their rights and responsibilities, empowering them to actively participate in the collective bargaining process. UNIPHIN's emphasis on capacity development within the care sector workforce contributed to skill enhancement and professional growth, ensuring that workers were equipped to negotiate for their rights effectively. UNIPHIN's commitment to organizing and supporting trade unions exemplifies its dedication to the holistic well-being and empowerment of care sector workers in Nepal.
