General Agricultural Workers Union of Ghana (GAWU-TUC)
Founded in February 1959, GAWU is over 60 years old and is one of the 23 affiliate unions of Ghana's Trades Union Congress (TUC). GAWU is the biggest agricultural trade union in Ghana, with a membership of close to 10,000 within both formal and informal sectors. Its Head Office is in Accra, Ghana, with regional, district, and community offices all over the rest of the country. It is affiliated with the IUF in Geneva. GAWU aims to champion the cause of agricultural workers through consistent empowerment, policy advocacy, representation, and organization.
Further information
GAWU has offices in all 10 regions of Ghana, with local unions at workplaces on farms and in communities. Historically, GAWU's two General Secretaries have become the Secretary General of the TUC, with other leaders doubling as members of the Executive Council.
GAWU's campaigns and accomplishments
- Led the national fight against child labour and forced labour, including extensive work in small communities and establishing the TORKOR Model (an integrated area-based approach towards child-labour-free zones)
