BC General Employees Union (BCGEU)

The BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) is one of the largest and most diverse unions in British Columbia, Canada with over 85,000 members in 550 bargaining units in the public and private sector.

We trace our beginnings back to the early 1900s when provincial government employees formed an association to address their working conditions. Since then, our union has organized thousands of workers outside the government service. We’re continuing to grow.

The BCGEU has created a number of educational resources commemorating significant milestones in our union and labour history.

Its history is documented in the BC Labour Heritage Oral History Collection, held at SFU.

To mark its 100 year anniversary, the BCGEU created a video series covering significant events in the union's history.

In 2018, the BCGEU collaborated with the BC Federation of Labour young workers’ committee to produce a video on the importance of labour history in BC.

The BCGEU's multimedia educational resources include two key items on women's roles in labour history: a video on the history of women in the BCGEU, and a shorter video on the landmark decision on the sexist, discriminatory fitness test for women in the wildfire service.
