Alberta Labour History Institute

Founded in 1999, the Alberta Labour History Institute (ALHI) brings together trade unionists, community activists, archivists, and historians to preserve the history of working people in Alberta, told largely through oral history. ALHI maintains a collection of thematic materials online, in their own offices, and at the Provincial Archives of Alberta. Drawing from these materials and supplementary archival research, ALHI has created a range of educational and public history materials, including calendars, videos, and conferences.

Indigenous Labour History Project

Recently, ALHI has sought to tell oral histories of the labour of First Nations and Métis people. One component of this project is a video, Waltzing with the Angels, telling the story of the Métis ironworkers who worked on skyscrapers in downtown Edmonton.
