Marliese Mendel

Biography

Marliese Mendel grew up in the workers' city of Kapfenberg on Johann-Böhm-Strasse (named after the co-founder of the Austrian Trade Union Federation (ÖGB)). She works at the ÖGB headquarters on Johann-Böhm-Platz in Vienna and has been a passionate archivist at the ÖGB since 2019.

Prior to this, she was a waitress, cook, barowner, waste management specialist, journalist, and author until she decided to study history. After graduating from university, she worked for the Association of Austrian Trade Union Education (VÖGB) and the Production trade union (PRO-GE).

Research Interests

My main interest is the history of the workers' movement and trade unions, with a special focus on women as workers and trade unionists, as well as the history and developments of wage policy and collective agreements.

I have worked on numerous projects in recent years, such as creating city walks on trade union history and women trade unionists, curating various exhibitions such as the cartoon exhibition, as well as projects on the history of nurses and trade union women.

Talks and Publications

I have written for a variety of publications, such as "Wir.Die Metaller" (history of the production union), "Wir.Die Frauen" (history of the trade union women), "Wir.Die Gewerkschaften" (history of the unions Land-Forst-Garten and the food and luxury food workers), history of the Viennese trade union schools, temporary work, and working time. I regularly write articles on trade union topics for the website https://www.oegb.at/themen/geschichte.

In addition, I lecture at various trade union training courses, work on television productions, and am available to journalists as an interview partner. I am a regular guest in the ÖGB-Podcast Nachgehört/Vorgedacht.
