Engineering Science Graduate Admissions

Before Applying

Before submitting an application, you should read carefully about:

Which program is right for you?

MASc and PhD are research-based programs and applicants are expected to identify a Supervisor prior to admission. MEng is a course-based program. Applicants to the MEng program do not need to identify the Supervisor prior to admission.

Note that admission to our graduate programs is highly competitive. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission.

We currently do not have specialties or concentrations. However, graduate studies at the School of Engineering Science can be done in any of the main program areas with respect to our Research Areas.

Admission Requirements

Master of Applied Science (MASc)

To qualify for admission to the MASc. program, a student must meet the University admission requirements and:

  • must have a Bachelor's degree or the equivalent in electrical engineering, computer engineering, engineering science or a related area
  • must identify a faculty member willing to act as a supervisor.

Information regarding finding a supervisor can be found here. You can also look for a supervisor base on a specific research field

Master of Engineering (MEng)

To qualify for admission to the MEng program, applicants must meet the minimum university requirements for admission and have a Bachelor's degree or the equivalent in electrical engineering, computer engineering, engineering science or a related area.

English language waivers, conditional or qualifying admissions are never granted for this program.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

To qualify for admission to the PhD program, a student must satisfy the University minimum admission requirements and:

  • must have a master's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, computer science or a related field
  • have submitted evidence that he or she is capable of undertaking substantial original research in engineering science
  • have identified a faculty member willing to act as a supervisor

Information regarding finding a supervisor can be found hereYou can also look for a supervisor base on a specific research field

Accelerated Masters - Undergraduate Students

For current undergraduate students in the School of Engineering Science, we offer an accelerated master's BASc-MASc program. Learn more about the program on our current student pages.

Required Documents

To complete your application, you will need to submit the following:

  • Statement of Interest
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Unofficial Transcripts
  • Three (3) Contacts of References

Any unlisted supporting docuemnts can be uploaded under "Optional or Additional Documents".

Letters of References

After you have input your referee's emails, the system will automatically send a request to your referees for references. They should upload the reference by follwoing the instructions from the system generated email. If your referees face problems in submitting their references, you have a few options to send in the reference to us:

  1. Referees can use their free email, but when they send in your reference, they have to use a letterhead.
  2. Referees can email their reference letter to enscgpa@sfu.ca. The department can upload on behalf of your referee. Please note when sending in their reference letter this way, to include who they are, who is the applicant, and ensure the email they're using is the same email as the one on the application.
  3. Or alternatively, consider a different referee to be your reference

SUBMIT SEALED OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS TO SFU

You will be contacted if you are being recommended for admission by the School of Engineering Science. After you have received your offer of admission, you need to submit transcripts for any post-secondary institutions (except SFU) you have attended. Transcripts must be official documents, sealed, and sent directly to Simon Fraser University (physically or electronically) by the institution of issue. For physical transcripts, do not open the envelope — if you open it, it is no longer official.

More details and mailing addresses about submitting official transcripts can be found here.
