New MSE Graduate Student Checklist

Welcome to SFU! Below you will find a list of admin tasks you will need to complete to get setup.

Gernal SFU

  1. Activate your computing ID (this will be your SFU email handle, and it is different than your 9-digit SFU student number)
  2. Fill out the Key/card access form to access campus spaces
  3. Enroll in courses asap (deadline: end of week 2 of term)
    • MASc students - enroll in MSE 898 MASc Thesis every term until you graduate
    • PhD students - enroll in MSE 890 PhD Qualifying Exam every term until you pass your Qualifying Exam, then enroll in MSE 899 PhD Thesis every term until you graduate
  4. Pay your tuition*
  5. Get your SFU student ID card (you will be asked to provide an acceptable form of ID)*

General Items

  1. Find housing
  2. Open a Canadian bank account
  3. Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  4. Buy a Compass card to use public transit
  5. Load your U-Pass on your Compass card*
  6. If you meet the U-Pass exemption eligibility criteria, you may request a U-Pass exemption by the deadline listed at the link.*

*can only be completed 24hrs after enrollment.

For MASc & PhD Students

  1. Research Assistants only - Have your supervisor fill out the RA form on CourSys to setup your payroll
  2. Declare your supervisor (This is to confirm you will be working with the same supervisor you were admitted under. Upon admission all students in research programs need to declare their supervisors).
  3. Complete two 700 or 800 level technical courses graded on standard grading basis (A+, B, etc) to be eligible for Graduate Fellowships as soon as possible.

  • CourSys is the platform where all graduate student requests are submitted to the admin office.

Tuition

MSE graduate students pay flat-rate tuition.

MSE graduate students pay tuition per term.  Undergraduate courses are available to graduate students at an additional cost. Please refer to the Tuition & Fees page for details.

Supervisory Committee

Please declare your supervisory committee as soon as possible.

MASc + PhD students: Noting your supervisor's name in your admission application does not automatically appoint them as your supervisor. To officially declare your supervisor please refer to the Supervisory Commitees page.

Connect with a Faculty

Do you wish to speak to a faculty member in-person?

Please make an appointment with them via email before coming to the campus. Unlike admin staff, faculty members may not be on campus all day. Please refer to the faculty directory for contact information.

Make sure you do not miss any deadlines. Enroll in + drop courses, submit your U-Pass exemption request, and apply for graduation on time.

Graduate Drop-In

Graduate Program Assistant will answer questions regarding program requirements, enrollment, qualifying exams, thesis defences, supervisory committees and more.

Drop-ins will be available to MASc and PhD students.

Drop-in Hours:

  • Monday: 2-4pm
  • Tuesday: 10-12pm
  • Wednesday: 2-4pm
  • Thursday: No drop-in
  • Friday: 10-12pm
