Mechatronic Systems Engineering Research Labs

The School of Mechatronic Systems Engineering is renowned for its pioneering, interdisciplinary research. We have an innovative faculty with a diverse range of research interests plus productive relationships with many industry partners, from start-ups to large companies. Our research mandate is to address industry challenges, advance knowledge, and contribute to the training of highly qualified personnel.  We also welcome opportunities to work with industry in the development of commercial products and applications.

The school has also been highly successful in attracting research funding from agencies such as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Canadian Networks of Centres of Excellence such as Auto21 and MITACS, and industrial partners.

Research within our school encompasses many areas, including sensing, actuation, intelligent systems, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, power, and energy. MSE's mission is to provide the critical link between the cyber and physical worlds in an increasingly cyber-physical society, engaging.

Research Areas:

  1. Sensing, Actuation, and Intelligent Systems:
    • Sensing Technologies: Development of advanced sensors for real-time monitoring and data acquisition in various applications.
    • Actuation Systems: Design and implementation of precise actuation mechanisms to control mechanical systems effectively.
    • Robotics and Automation: Research in autonomous systems capable of performing complex tasks with minimal human intervention.
    • Artificial Intelligence Integration: Incorporation of AI algorithms to enhance system decision-making and adaptability.
  2. Advanced Manufacturing:
    • Smart Manufacturing Hub: SFU has established a state-of-the-art Smart Manufacturing Hub aimed at revolutionizing traditional manufacturing processes.
    •  Additive Manufacturing: Exploration of 3D printing technologies for creating complex geometries and integrating electronics in innovative ways.
  3. Biomechatronics and Healthcare:
    • Wearable Systems: Development of soft mechatronics and wearable devices for health monitoring and rehabilitation.
    • AI in Mental Health: Projects focused on empowering individuals with conditions like decreased sound tolerance through AI-driven solutions.
    • Exoskeleton for disability rehabilitation.
