SEE students explore BC Hydro's Control Centre
Students from SEE 476 recently visited BC Hydro's Control Centre for their recent field trip. The centre serves as a hub for electricity management for the province, ensuring the reliable and efficient delivery of power to millions of British Columbians.
The students were given a tour of the cutting-edge facility which oversees the flow of electricity across the grid. The centre is responsible for coordinating the operations of hydroelectric dams and substations while managing real-time fluctuations in power demand and system conditions. During their visit, the students gained an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the complexities of electricity distribution, including load balancing, grid security, and emergency response protocols. The tour also highlighted the advanced technologies and rigorous training that empower the skilled professionals at the facility to maintain a safe, sustainable, and resilient power system for the province.
The SEE 476 - Renewable Energy Systems course, led by Senior Lecturer Mahda Jahromi, explores wind, solar, tidal, hydro and fuel cell energy conversion systems, their grid interfacing technologies and economics of distributed generation.
