School of Sustainable Energy Engineering
SEE celebrates 5th anniversary
This year marks a significant milestone for our School of Sustainable Energy Engineering (SEE) as we celebrate five years since the launch of our program.
Over the last five years, we have witnessed incredible growth, groundbreaking research, and the development of brilliant minds dedicated to shaping a sustainable future.
To recognize the accomplishments of its faculty members, students and alumni, SEE hosted a celebration event on November 22. The event included speeches from Joy Johnson, SFU's president and vice-chancellor, Eugene Fiume, dean of the Faculty of Applied Science, and Zafar Adeel, SEE director pro tem. It also included a student awards ceremony and testimonials reflecting on prosperity of the program.

Hightlights from the celebration
Triple A Award in the School of Sustainable Energy Engineering
Recipient: Ava Khademi
TELUS Award in the School of Sustainable Energy Engineering
Recipient: Michael La Grange
Hear about Michael's SEE journey so far:
I've been on SFU Team Phantom FSAE for 2.5 years, in a leadership role for the last 2 years. I lead a team of 25 students developing the tractive system for our electric race car (batteries, inverter, motor, cooling), managing 10+ active projects simultaneously while gearing up for our first competition in April/May. We have almost finished developing and manufacturing our first full-size battery pack. We have also assembled and tested a full liquid cooling loop for our inverter and motor. We are currently developing our own custom dynamometer to test our motor and measure its power. My main role is to manage all of these projects and their timelines, facilitate their development, provide resources for my members to use, and ensure we remain on schedule to complete our portion of the car, I also provide technical insight into projects when I can.
Outside of school, I have been volunteering at my local church for over 3 years, where I manage sound mixing of live instruments, singers, and speakers for YouTube livestreams and funerals, I have also trained others in this position.
Recipient: Andrew Nathan
Hear about Andrew's SEE journey so far:
I competed in the SFU Engineering Competition in spring of this year where my competition partner and I came second in the consulting category for developing some Fraser Valley Flood Protection systems.
I have also completed a few co-op terms at MineSense where I worked with the geoscience team to develop technology to sort high-quality ores from waste at Canadian and international mines.
Wheel Rail Seminars Award in Sustainable Energy Engineering
Recipient: Kaleb Carlson
Hear about Kaleb's SEE journey so far:
Since my first year, I have been interested in sustainable transportation. In SEE 101W, I wrote a technical research paper on the environmental benefits of autonomous vehicles. In my second year, I worked on a design project in SEE 324 on cryogenic storage system for transporting liquid hydrogen. In my third year, I did my first co-op job as a hydrogen fuel cell researcher at Ballard Power Systems to help with developing new fuel cell technologies. In my fourth year, I did my second co-op job as an Energy Engineer at BC Ferries, to help with executing their Strategic Energy Management Plan.
Now, I am grateful to have received the Wheel Rail Seminars Award in Sustainable Energy Engineering for my final year in SEE. I will continue to work hard to create a successful capstone project and soon start a career focused on sustainable transportation.
