Distribution of Short-finned Pilot Whales:

A total of six confirmed oppotunistic sightings of short-finned pilot whales were recorded over the four field seasons of effort of the leeward coast of Domincia. The short-finned pilot whale is almost identical to the long-finned pilot whale, its cold water relative, with the exception of its pectoral flippers which are about half as long. This species is a member of the cooloquially termed group, the "blackfish", as it is one of a few species of cetacean with very dark black skin. Figure 8, below, identifies the location and distribution of all "blackfish" sightings across all four field seasons. The few sightings of short-finned pilot whales distribute themselves along the much of the leeward coast.
