Spatial Analysis

Location and Intensity of CW Effort:

Once all of the input rasters were formatted correctly (as in Preparation and Manipulation), I was able to conduct a simple overlay (using the image calculator by 'adding' images to sum the values within cells) of all 45 frequency rasters. The resulting image was then reclassified into eight categories based on the number of minutes the vessel spent within a given cell. Catergories were defined by five minute intervals, with the exception of the final category which was all cells with greater than 30 minutes of effort. This threshold was used as it is the time limit for CW vessel to interact with animals under the majority of the cetacean watching guidelines from around the world (Carlson, 2007). Cells with more than 200 minutes logged within them were considered ports.
