Making a Difference

January 08, 2024

Your generous contributions made a difference this holiday season! The Faculty of Education continued the tradition of hampers for families in need from the Lena Shaw Elementary School in Surrey, contributed to the SFU Food Pantry, and supported the family of Abdiqani, a resilient deafblind student from Matthew McNair Secondary School in Richmond.

The Surrey Education Office raised $1219 in support of two Lena Shaw families – one with a mom and dad and two boys, the other with a mom and dad, three boys and a girl. Not only did these families get almost everything on their wish lists, but they also received personalized bookmarks, decorations, and even “Santa’s Underwear” for gift cards – all crafted by our colleagues.

With your support, we were also able to collect $950 to support Abdiqani’s transition to adulthood and day programs. Abdiqani now has an iPad Air, with a case and stand, and his family would like to send their heartfelt thanks to the SFU Faculty of Education for this generous and helpful gift. Please also read this letter from Matthew McNair School.

We have also contributed non-perishable food supplies, gifts, and $150 in cash to the SFU Food Pantry. This vital resource provides emergency top-up food and hygiene supplies to food-insecure students.
