Year Graduated: 2013
Program/Degree: C&I Health Education and Active Living MEd
"If you are willing to embrace the autonomy, the flexibility and the challenges it places before you, you will enjoy every part of your program and leave with more knowledge and opportunities than you could have ever imagined."
Hello! I am thrilled to be able share a little information with you about myself and about my experience as a graduate student studying in the SFU: MEd Health and Active Living (HEAL) program.
I have been working as a Registered Nurse for over 12 years now and currently, I am teaching in the post secondary realm, working with eager B.Sc. nursing students as they complete their journey through nursing school. I am also an active member of the Curriculum Review & Planning Committee, exploring best teaching practices in the ever-changing world of medicine, technology, and health science.
Having worked in a myriad of specialty areas within the health care system, what has captivated my interest over the years has been the capacity for health care professionals to create and foster strong, working relationships with their patients and families. Not just “professional” relationships per se, but rather organic, life changing relationships, which embody authenticity and humanism.
I continue to be astonished by the determination of health care workers to delve into the essence of human suffering and human healing - despite heavy workloads, crippling work environments, and at the risk of compromising their own personal well being. This is where my present research interest lies: Inquiry into self and its relation to pedagogical practices and professional working environments.
What attracted you to come to SFU?
Many of my family members and friends spoke of the “community environment” they felt and enjoyed when they had attended SFU. I was interested in pursuing a program that focused on “community”, health and well being – SFU seemed to embody these themes, as well as offer programs which focused them too. It was the perfect fit.
Who is a faculty member you have enjoyed working with and why?
I have enjoyed working with Stephen Smith during my MEd Program. His unique outlook on pedagogy, health, and active living is refreshing and has challenged me to question my practices – as well as consider what I can offer to my profession and my students. Stephen brings a passion and depth to his teaching that is terribly infectious and absolutely engaging!
What would you say to prospective students who are considering graduate school in the Faculty of Education?
Graduate school can be a life altering experience, if you are willing to “own” it! What I mean is, if you are willing to embrace the autonomy, the flexibility and the challenges it places before you, you will enjoy every part of your program and leave with more knowledge and opportunities than you could have ever imagined.
