Previous Peer Mentor

Tara Trang

Graduated: 2021

I wanted to be a peer mentor to help support first-year students with their transition to SFU. I also wanted to be more involved at SFU! I remember how awkward and sad my transition was being an Education student, specifically from Surrey. I was alone and stuck with FASS students on Welcome day and didn't meet anyone sharing the same passion as to be an educator until I was in my first Education class.

What is your best first year memory?

Meeting people and making friends! Every class or event I attended, I would meet someone new. Sometimes you can end up sharing your whole semester with someone and become great friends!

Words of advice to new students?

Get a planner or a calendar to be more organize! There are so many deadlines in University and they can be easily forgotten. I love using my monthly spread to see what I have to look forward to and complete the task in a timely matter! It is also a great to write down what you did each day and you can look back on it!

What are you involved in on and off campus?

On campus, I am and a Welcome Day leader at Burnaby and a Summit Peer Leader. In Summit, I support students from different faculties with their transition to SFU from high school during a week-long program and keep in touch with the students throughout their first school year.  Off campus, I volunteer and work with the City of Surrey. I have also previously volunteered with the Early Learning Program (ELF) at Central City for a year!
