Previous Peer Mentor

Sophia Macarayan

Graduated: 2021

I wanted to be someone that could support incoming students just as my peer mentor did with me. Stepping into university can be overwhelming but having people to turn to can definitely help. This was exactly my experience, transitioning from a very small school to a huge university. Having a peer mentor is what helped me find a sense of community and find different ways to be involved and meet some amazing people along the way. Hopefully, I can also be that person for someone coming to SFU.

What is your best first year memory?

Volunteering and being involved with clubs on campus! Once I got more involved with University Christian Ministries and volunteered at Racing Readers, I got to know so many amazing people in my first year. It definitely made the whole first-year experience worthwhile.

Words of advice to new students?

For the organization, I highly recommend some type of planner and calendar system that works for you! Having an overview of upcoming due dates and other important dates keep me on track and provide a visual of what I need to get done. I have this huge monthly calendar that I stick on my wall and it definitely helps me to space out what I need to prioritize especially once it hits exam season.

What are you involved in on and off campus?

On campus, I’m a part of the leadership team of a club called University Christian Ministries. I am also a general member of the Education Student Association. Off campus, I usually work at after-school programs through the YMCA and the Surrey School District.
