Previous Peer Mentor
Jazmine Palces
I became a peer mentor because I want to provide guidance and assistance towards my fellow students in the university. My experience with my peer mentor, Susan helped me so much as I transitioned towards the university. Coming from a different country, it was certainly difficult to adjust to a new setting. However, with the help of Susan, everything went as smoothly as possible. This experience inspired me to become a peer mentor myself. I want to give back to the community, and I want to help my fellow students to the fullest of my abilities.
What is your best first year memory?
I'd say my best first-year memory was attending EDventure Day. The activities and games planned were so much fun and I loved the positive environment and opportunity to meet new people. I was able to connect with other education students and make some wonderful friends! It was a very enjoyable and memorable experience!
Words of advice to new students?
My advice for new students is to step out of your comfort zone, and be open to trying new things. Moving to Canada allowed me to meet new individuals along the way, speak my mind, adapt to my surroundings, adjust to situations, and learn more positively impacting my growth as a person. Life is a never-ending stream of opportunities, therefore, allowing yourself to try new things will certainly aid in developing your mental, physical and emotional well-being.
What are you involved in on and off campus?
Aside from being a peer mentor, I am also a volunteer in the Canadian Red Cross Organization as a Personal Disaster Assistance Team Responder. These experiences have definitely allowed me to further develop my communication and leadership skills as well. Moreover, such experiences will certainly enhance my growth personally and professionally preparing me for future opportunities to come.
