Previous Peer Mentor
Douglas Lightfoot
I became a peer mentor because I strongly believe that the field of education is extremely vital to our society, and in order to build our next generation of amazing teachers, we need strong education programs that give future teachers the tools to succeed. I felt that becoming a peer mentor would allow me to help give this year’s new education students a leg up in their journey to becoming the educators of tomorrow.
What is your best first year memory?
My favourite thing about my first year at SFU was to be able to connect with other young people pursuing a career in the education field. The cool thing about university is that while you may have been the only person interested in a particular field in high school, you are almost guaranteed to meet others with similar interests in your university program!
Words of advice to new students?
I would encourage new students to not ignore any resources that will make their university experience better personally or academically. Whether it’s a club or sports team that allows you to pursue your interests, mental health supports or academic resources, if you believe something could be beneficial, don’t be afraid to enquire!
What are you involved in on and off campus?
I have pursued various paid and volunteer positions centred around engaging young people in recreation, including working as a coach for my local summer swim club on Vancouver Island and assisting children with disabilities participating in rec centre summer camps. On campus, I have participated in the photography club and have enjoyed attending various Faculty of Education and ESA events.
