Previous Peer Mentor

I became a peer mentor because I remember I was significantly lost as a first-year not too long ago. Not knowing many people, and due to the pandemic, I did not have many social events to transition into university, but thankfully my peer mentor provided me with lots of support, reassurance and advice. So with my positive experience as a mentee, I want to create a smooth and welcoming process for the first years.

What is your best first year memory?

My best first-year memory was during the second semester when I was able actually head back to campus and it felt more “normal” to meet up with my friends after lectures and have study sessions inside the SUB.

Words of advice to new students?

Words of advice I can give new students is that grades do not define who you are, so do not let a failing grade bring you down! Everything will be okay if you did not pass a midterm or final exam; if you show your professor that you have put in the effort towards assignments or discussions throughout the semester, they will work something out with you. Additionally, I would also say get involved on campus. It can be scary, but clubs day or events hosted at school is an excellent way to meet new people!

What are you involved in on and off campus?

On campus, I am a part of the SFU Shockwave dragon boating team and course, and also a Peer Mentor in the Faculty of Education. Aside from campus, I am a lifeguard and swimming instructor.
