Awards and Scholarships

Carla Salvail Award in Communication

One award: valued at $1,700, is available to a full-time student in good academic standing in the School of Communication who has not only survived, emotional or other hardship in life but has triumphed over these challenges. Applicants must provide documentation describing their experiences such as personal statement, resume and/or a letter of reference.

 

Communication Alumni Award

Two awards: valued at $3,600 each are available to a third or fourth year undergraduate student in Communication who submits the best essay in the field of communication. Clean copies of essays submitted within the past year are eligible for consideration.

 

Fred and Elaine Moonen Scholarship

Two scholarships: based on academic merit, valued at $2,200 each, will be granted to students majoring in Communication in their third or fourth year of studies. Preference will be given to students in the Communication Honours program.

 

Omni Television Undergraduate Award in Communication

One or more awards: valued at a minimum of $1,000 each, will be granted to students enrolled full-time in the School of Communication who have declared their major, are in good academic standing, and have demonstrated volunteer contributions to the promotion of multiculturalism in Canada. Applications must include a summary of the applicant's volunteer contributions and a letter of reference from someone who can verify those contributions.

Glenfraser ICP Planning Award in Acoustic Communication

The Glenfraser ICP Planning Award in Acoustic Communication (two awards valued at $1,000 each), is specifically directed to undergraduate students enrolled in any of the acoustic or electroacoustic courses in the School of Communication (CMNS 258, 259, 357, 358, 359, Directed Study, Project Group, Honours program or Special Topics course with a subject in Sound Studies) over the past three semesters.  

As part of the application package, students must include the following support documentation:

  • (a) A cover letter and resumé summarizing scholastic achievements and work relevant to the aims of this award.
  • (b) A maximum of two written essays or compositions that represent the student’s work in soundscape studies/composition or acoustic communication.
  • (c) Your unofficial goSFU transcript which shows a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00.
  • (d) You must be registered in a minimum of 9 units of standard graded courses in the Fall 2021 semester.

Honours Awards

Rogers Communication Inc. Award in Communication

One award: valued at $4,500, will be given to a student enrolled in the Communications Honours program to assist with the cost of completing the Honours project. Preference will be given to students whose project addresses recent issues in Communication (eg: relating to television or to the production of a video.) 
 

Radio Station CHMB AM 1320 Award in Communication

Two awards: valued at $3,600 each, will be given to a student enrolled in the Communications Honours program to assist with the cost of completing the Honours project. Preference will be given to a multi-lingual student whose Honours project addresses issues regarding the diversity of languages and cultures in Metro Vancouver with a focus on the role of mass media, preferably radio.

 

Award and Scholarship criteria

Scholarships:

  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50
  • Registration in a minimum of 12 units of standard grades courses in the current semester.
  • A student holding an ongoing SFU Entrance Scholarship is not eligible for any other University administered scholarships until the entrance scholarship is fully paid out
 
Awards:
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 at SFU and be in good academic standing
  • Registration in a minimum of 9 units of standard graded courses in the current semester.

Application requirements:

  • Copy of your unofficial SFU transcript
  • Cover letter addressed to Dr. Frederik Lesage, Undergraduate Chair (Please indicate in your cover letter which award or awards, if applicable, that you are applying for.)
  • Letter of support from a CMNS faculty member
  • *Honour Awards: Include a copy of your Honours Project in your application
