How Yzobel Biron became a Successful Entrepreneur after Graduation

August 07, 2024

School of Communication and School of Interactive Arts & Technology alumnus Yzobel Biron has excelled as an entrepreneur since graduating from Simon Fraser University in 2020. Her career has included founding a communications agency, a UX design agency, growing her personal brand and producing a podcast.

“The FCAT double minor program, combining Communication and Interactive Arts & Technology, allowed me to develop a diverse set of skills in technical, communication and design areas. This skillset has enabled me to pivot across different industries and adapt to the ever-evolving worlds of technology, design, and marketing,” says Biron.

“The School of Communication fostered my critical thinking, introduced me to incredible individuals, and broadened my perspective, empowering me to make a more significant impact.”

Upon graduation, Biron founded communications agency In. Communications Inc. and grew the company to be a multi-six-figure agency.

She then exited the company and began a UX design agency named Yzobel Creative Inc., where she built a portfolio in writing, design, UX and media production, targeting tech companies as her primary clients. This strategic approach paid off when she landed a contractor role with Autodesk in 2022. In fact, the relationship between her and Autodesk was so strong that they created a full-time position specifically for her.

“Autodesk is a place where passionate and dedicated colleagues come together to create something extraordinary. The collaborative environment and the opportunity to innovate daily make it an inspiring place to work,” says Biron.

In her role as a Technical Writer & Visual Content Creator at Autodesk, Biron designs a wide array of marketing and sales materials including brochures, newsletters, graphics and customer success stories. Working closely with Autodesk’s engineers, UX designers, and project managers, her role is to ensure that the content aligns with company guidelines and market needs.

She also hosts her podcast Up and About, which focuses on topics such as mindset, wellness and self-love, inspiring her listeners to pursue their passions with confidence.

While Biron says that she’s always been driven creatively and entrepreneurially, she was especially encouraged by her partner, award-winning entrepreneur and former SFU FCAT valedictorian, Joshua Jackai, to pursue full-time entrepreneurship.

“From this experience, I learned that entrepreneurship is a powerful tool for personal development. As I grew personally, my business grew as well. Entrepreneurship teaches valuable lessons in accountability, responsibility, and self-awareness. It also helps you understand psychology and overcome your own limiting beliefs,” says Biron.

When asked what advice she has for current communication students, Biron says to put yourself out there, seek out mentors, build your portfolio and take risks while you’re young. For specific info on how to break into the tech industry, she discusses this topic in one of her podcast episodes.
