Room Booking

Please see below the rooms that can be booked at the School of Communication, with individual descriptions and links to the room calendar. Booking is available to faculty, staff, and graduate students.

For undergraduate students, please reach out to your instructor or teaching assistant to book access to these spaces, except for K7651 which is an open lab accessible to you from 8am-6pm Mon-Fri and the K7651 Soundbooth which is directly bookable for undergraduate students.

Important Notes:

Audio and video equipment can be booked by registered CMNS students. Please contact Technical Support at cmnstech@sfu.ca.

We offer basic training for the first time you book the studios, to teach you the minimum skills required to operate the systems. To book training please email cmnstech@sfu.ca.

Software:

All labs have access to the following software: Adobe Creative Cloud, Adobe Acrobat DC, Microsoft Office, Audacity, Davinci Resolve, Garageband, GIMP, Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Handbrake, IBM SPSS Statistics, Logic Pro, Keynote, Pages, Numbers, Nvivo, OneDrive, Processing, Tableau, TextMate, VLC, Zoom, Zotero.

Software titles not listed may be able to be added with a request to cmnstech@sfu.ca.

SFU Burnaby Campus

Sonic Studio (K7657)

Use: The Sonic Research Studio is a space dedicated for critical listening, audio recording, editing, and mixing. It is set up with state-of-the-art hardware and software, and it is an ideal place to record interviews, vlogs, video lectures, and podcasts. The room has near-field audio speakers for stereo applications, and 8 speakers on the ceiling that allows for surround sound playback.

The studio includes a Mac Studio computer connected to a large 32 inch Dell display, a UAD Apollo 8x auto interface, microphones, MIDI controllers, a 1/4 inch reel-to-reel tape deck, turntable, and other equipment. Some of the software in the studio’ computer include Adobe Audition, Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Pro Tools, and a number of plugins from Universal Audio, GRM Tools, iZotope and others.

Capacity: 1 Workstation, 10 Seats

Note there is a mandatory training session required the first time you use the studio: please contact cmnstech@sfu.ca along with your booking.

SCK7651 Open Lab

Use: This computer lab is a drop-in lab that can be used based on availability. Students can use the computers to work on assignments and projects.

This is an open lab, open from 8am-6pm Mon-Fri. There is no need to book specific time slots, and space is available on a first-come, first-served based. Please check the calendar to see if there are any classes or events scheduled ahead of time. Please make sure to close the door behind you as you leave the space.

SCK7651 Lab Soundbooth

Use: This sound booth is located inside the K7651 Computer Lab. Soundbooth with microphone works in conjunction with an audio interface and computer with a number of digital audio applications. If you haven’t used this set up and require a training session, please contact cmnstech@sfu.ca along with your booking.

SCK7655 Lab

Use: This computer lab is used for classes/tutorials. It can also be used for special events such as summer schools in video production or podcasting, or on ad-hoc basis for computer-based tutorials from any current CMNS course. Faculty and graduate students may book this space when not otherwise booked for classes.

TASC II Main Studio (Room 7550)

Use: The TASC II Studio is designed as a video production and photography studio. It contains a green screen and other colour backdrops, an 86 inch TV set that can be used as background, lighting systems, a photo/video camera mounted on a rolling tripod, and other equipment. Other audio and video equipment can be booked using our CMNS Equipment Request form: https://forms.office.com/r/9P8rcp05XR

TASC II Creative Studio (Inside Room 7550)

Use: The creative studio is a separate space in the TASC II Studio, which contains a Sound Booth, as well as a Podcast and Video Blog system. Soundbooth with microphone works in conjunction with an audio interface and computer with a number of digital audio applications. The Podcast/Vlog system has a computer, audio interface, microphone, audio speakers for editing and mixing, LED lights, and a video camera. Video and audio software is also available.

These spaces are not bookable by undergraduate students.
