Learn about the process to get a new website or upgrade your existing site, as well as what you need to consider when planning your website project.
Do You Need a Website?
Before you decide to start any website project, it is important to make sure that a website is the best solution for your need. It is important to understand that a website on its own is not a communications strategy, but rather it is a vehicle for delivering an existing strategy. It represents just one of the ways your audience should be engaged.
You need to consider:
- Does your department/unit/group have a communications strategy in place?
- How will your website help deliver this strategy?
- Does your website have its own defined goals and purpose?
- Is your audience primarily external to SFU?
- Is there a long-term need for a website, or does your project or initiative have an end date?
- Do you have a team to create content & build pages?
- Are you able to update your website regularly?
If you aren’t able to answer these questions, then maybe a website isn’t the best option right now.
You can consider:
- MS Teams for engaging with a primarily internal audience
- Leveraging an existing website (such as your department or faculty site) if your content has an end goal or is lacking a defined goal
- Revisiting a website project in the future.
