Photography

Photography plays a crucial role in bringing our brand to life.

Portraits

Our photographic style can be applied to portraits and is the preferred approach for communications and marketing. For example, in faculty profile pages, news stories and social media.

Formal portraits

For formal portraits for identification purposes:

  • Use a light-to-medium gray background with eyes to the camera
  • Use the visual style in the example below
  • Landscape orientation allows photos to be easily cropped to square, and used in wide applications such as horizontal banners

Formal studio portraits

Our formal studio portraits are consistent and versatile, and can be obtained through Communications & Marketing or a contract photographer.

Contract photographers

Refer to our photography guidelines for direction on style and tips while hiring a contract photographer. SFU faculty and staff can book the Communications & Marketing Studio (Education Building 7628) for portraits by SFU faculty and staff at no cost. To book the studio or request referrals for contract photographers, please contact sfu-brand@sfu.ca.

Note: contract photographers can also be engaged for outdoor and on-location portraits.

SFU Communications & Marketing (C&M) photo days

C&M contracts external vendor Artona for faculty, staff and graduate student portraits on prescheduled dates. Artona specializes in volume portraiture (“Photo Days”) for the secondary and post-secondary market. C&M covers the cost for this service.

C&M Photo Days are intended for professional applications such as a website faculty listing and not intended for standard identification such as passport photos or ID cards. For standard identification please use alternate suppliers such as London Drugs.

CHANGES FOR 2024/2025

  1. Those getting photographed (Subjects) can now book their own time slot. Communicators can continue to book slots on behalf of Subjects. This change is for convenience and to minimize no-shows.
  2. Subjects will no longer select their favourite portrait immediately, instead will leave the photoshoot with a personalized QR code to access options online to select and download a favourite. If no selections are made Artona will favourite the last photo taken.
  3. All favourites will be further processed then sent to unit Communicators within one month of the photoshoot.

Instructions for Communicators

  1. Preferred method: Forward the photoshoot date, time, location and scheduling calendar URL to staff, faculty and grad students who qualify a professional portrait. Scheduling requires Subject’s first and last name, email address and unit. If bookings are full a waitlist will be provided.
  2. Alternative method: Schedule photos on behalf of Subjects. Due to the number of no-shows and arrivals outside of scheduled times, we prefer Subjects book appointments themselves.
  3. Note, Subjects will leave the photoshoot with a QR code to view photos online, select a favourite and download one vertical portrait online. After December 2 all favourites will be processed as horizontal portraits then sent to unit Communicators by December 16. Note, horizontal (wide) portraits can be cropped square and vertical where needed.

Instructions for subjects

  1. Receive date, time, location and scheduling calendar URL from Communicator.
  2. Schedule photoshoot online.
  3. Arrive at scheduled time.
  4. Select the pre-printed ticket on the entrance table displaying Subject name with QR code. Wait in the queue.  Speak to support staff if pre-printed ticket is not available.
  5. Photographer will take three-to-four photos. Leave with ticket and QR code.
  6. Starting Monday Nov. 25 use the QR code to access pictures online then select one favourite. Subjects can immediately download favourite in portrait orientation. If no favourites are chosen by December 2, Artona will assign the last photo taken.
  7. Favourites will then be converted to landscape orientation and shared with unit Communicators by December 16.

Important notice

  • Subjects who arrive unreasonably earlier or later than their scheduled time cannot be guaranteed that their photo will be taken.
