This can include but not limited to; fresh insights, a significant improvement or even a revolution in a business or teaching process or other activity undertaken in the past two years that significantly improves some aspect of what FASS does and so has lasting impact and benefits for our students and our communities.

Tess Williams

Office of the Dean

A systems consultant with the FASS Dean’s Office, Tess Williams has been a champion for institutional change for equity, diversity, and inclusion at SFU—advocating for trans rights and inspiring positive changes across the university. She was instrumental in co-developing SFU’s first Trans Equity Survey, pushing for change on the deadnaming issue in SFU’s IT systems, and helping to establish a Trans Equity Pod as a focus area for the university’s EDI Community of Practice. As part of her volunteer work as an Administrative and Professional Association (APSA) board member, Williams was the key individual responsible for advocating for gender-affirming care to be included in the extended healthcare benefits for SFU employees, even going a step further in lobbying Pacific Blue Cross to include it in their benefits packages.

Judi Fraser

History

Since joining the Department of History in 2009, Judi Fraser has built a distinguished 15-year career as a manager for the department. Described as an “organizational wiz” and "a veritable living encyclopedia” of departmental history and the ins-and-outs of SFU, Fraser’s leadership and insightful guidance has been instrumental for department chairs and faculty members alike. Beyond her technical expertise, Fraser’s kindness and her ability to foster a supportive and inclusive community truly sets her apart. From introducing cherished departmental traditions like "Pie Day" and organizing celebrations for milestones, Fraser has been key to bringing everyone together and strengthening the sense of unity within the department. Her bonds with colleagues extend beyond the walls of this institution—When a retired staff member fell ill, she did not hesitate to step in and rally support for them, making sure that they felt cared for during this difficult period. Her compassion extends to graduate students as well,  with many crediting her for making them feel welcomed at SFU. Her dedication to the department has made a profound and lasting impact on everyone around her.

Ellen Siew Meng Yap

International Studies

As the manager of the School for International Studies, Ellen Yap is commended for her combination of deep expertise, meticulous attention to detail, and compassionate approach in her interactions with faculty, staff, and students. Her poise and resilience under pressure as she navigates numerous departmental shifts and challenges is an illustration of her tenacity and commitment to excellence. The impact Yap has on students has also been profound, with many attesting that her support and encouragement have been pivotal to their academic success and personal growth, even long after their graduation from SFU.

Message from Ellen:
I would like to thank and acknowledge my hardworking, creative and empathetic counterparts in other FASS units for all that they do, as well as my incredibly talented team in International Studies for their hard work and care for our colleagues and students alike. They make working in IS joyful, particularly during these difficult times at the university.

Team Work Performance Award

FASS Administrative Team

Office of the Dean

The FASS Dean's Office administrative team currently consists of Stacey Fujimoto, Ophelia Fu, and Nicole Yoo, with the award also recognizing former team members Clare Zheng and Sophia Zeng. Often the first ones in the office and the last ones to leave at the end of the day, the team has been instrumental in supporting FASS leadership, especially during periods of change and uncertainty. Despite staffing shortages and significant organizational shifts—including transitions through multiple pro tem deans, a new dean, five associate deans, and three senior administrators—the team has consistently demonstrated remarkable commitment, resiliency, and positivity. When the faculty affairs team was short-handed, the administrative team jumped in and redistributed responsibilities among themselves to help cover the gap, even if it meant taking on additional work and learning new processes from scratch. By organizing social events, coordinating greeting cards, and taking care of tasks many of us take for granted, the FASS administrative team plays a crucial role in fostering a sense of community within the office and keeping the office running smoothly.
