FASS announces new Research Excellence Award
As part of its commitment to advancing excellence in research, innovation, and academic scholarship, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) is pleased to announce the creation of the FASS Research Excellence Award, which recognizes impactful scholarly contributions by faculty members.
"At FASS, we've proudly presented the Cormack Award for outstanding teaching, yet we recognized there wasn’t a similar recognition for honouring research excellence," says FASS Associate Dean of Research, Steeve Mongrain.
Up to four Research Excellence Awards will be awarded annually to tenured or tenured track faculty members in recognition of academic scholarship excellence, with an emphasis on significant contributions while in position in FASS.
"This award underscores our commitment to celebrating researchers at every stage of their career journey, from early career researchers making their mark to established faculty whose collective body of work has left a lasting impact," says Mongrain. "We also wanted to highlight the breadth of research happening across FASS, which is why we introduced two distinctive streams—one dedicated to the social sciences and another to the humanities."
The award categories are as follows:
- Early Career Research Excellence Award in Social Sciences
- Early Career Research Excellence Award in Humanities
- Research Excellence Award in Social Sciences
- Research Excellence Award in Humanities
The early career category will be awarded to scholars who obtained their PhD within a 10-year window and produced impactful scholarship over those ten years while another category will be presented to scholars who have produced sustained and impactful scholarly output and achieved national and international recognition throughout their careers.
The first group of award recipients will be announced this September, with a recognition ceremony taking place during the FASS Fall Reception the following month. The next call for nominations will open in April next year.
