Arts Central staff ready to welcome a double-cohort of new students to SFU's Burnaby campus
SFU Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences' staff in Arts Central are ready to welcome a double-cohort of new students to the university's Burnaby campus this August. Whether students are part of SFU's Fall 2020 or Fall 2021 intake, this will be the first opportunity many students will have to meet each other, get to know campus in-person, and familiarize themselves with the university's spaces and resources.
Within FASS, Arts Central is a real hub of student activity and resources. It is home to the FASS Peer Mentor program, FASS academic advisors, and FASS co-operative education staff. These resources help enrich students' academic experiences and allow them to make connections that support their success in university.
"We are all very excited to welcoming students back," says Bettina Cenerelli, Director of Strategic and Academic Planning and Student Affairs.
"We missed seeing everyone very much, but we will of course make sure that our in-person interactions with students take place in a safe environment where everybody is feeling comfortable. Discovering FASS and the campus together with our Mentors is only the starting point of a promising Fall term."
Students are thus invited to "Get FASS Familiar" this Fall with a series of in-person and virtual events from August 23 - Sept 3. The series includes "FASS Tours," safe, in-person, guided tours where Arts Central staff will take new students through some of SFU's Burnaby campus buildings. Students can also get to know some of their potential professors and advisors through a virtual "FASS Fair," which features all FASS departments as well as a closer introduction to individual FASS professors through online "Prof Talks."
Arts Central will also facilitate students' introductions to each other and to the FASS Peer Mentors, says Stephanie Reinhardt, Coordinator, Student Engagement.
"Our tours are not just an opportunity to come to campus. Students should be prepared to make connections with other FASS students and enjoy some fun and games run by our Peer Mentor team. We really hope they will be able to sit back, relax, and enjoy a frozen treat with new-found friends."
FASS students from 2020 and 2021 cohorts are all encouraged to attend.
