FASS in the Class: The Off-Campus Visit

Bring SFU and FASS to your classroom with our guest speaker opportunities! 

We have a roster of highly successful FASS graduate students who are keen to share their research and career journeys with your students. Each speaker will bring a unique perspective to their presentation and will add value to the learning experience by sharing their knowledge and expertise in a humanities and social sciences subject.

What the Poets are Doing: Introducing Contemporary B.C. Poetry

Ideal for: Art, English, Contemporary Indigenous Studies, Social Justice, Career Education

Many students might be surprised to find that poetic writing in B.C. not only has an incredibly rich history but continues to thrive today. This presentation exposes students to a diverse selection of Indigenous and non-Indigenous poets who currently live in or had roots in Vancouver and surrounding communities. Through a particular emphasis on writing dealing with local geographies, histories, and social issues, students will be shown how literature and the arts can get them to see their surrounding environments and communities anew.

Speaker

Nick Tan (he/him) is a PhD student in the Department of English at Simon Fraser University, and he completed in M.A. in English at Concordia University, Montreal. His doctoral work involves looking at contemporary political poetry alongside major social movements of the past ‘long decade’ (namely, Occupy, Black Lives Matter, Idle No More/Indigenous land defense, and environmental activism). He also has a passion for education – having multiple teaching certification courses and years of teaching/tutoring experience under his belt – especially when it comes to exposing students to literary arts.
