Geling Yan
Born in Shanghai, Geling Yan (嚴歌苓) served in the People’s Liberation Army at the age of 12 as a dancer. She began writing at the age of 20 and holds a Master degree in Fine Arts in Fiction Writing from Columbia College Chicago, received many awards from Taiwan, Hong Kong and China.
Many of her works have been adapted to films and TV series, including Siao Yu(《少女小漁》), Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl (《天浴》), The Lost Daughter of Happiness (《扶桑》), The Criminal Lu Yanshi (《陸犯焉識》, adapted to Coming Home, directed by Yimou Zhang, featured by Daoming Chen and Gong Li), The Flowers of War (《金陵十三釵》, directed by Yimou Zhang), Little Aunt Crane (《小姨多鶴》), Youth (《芳華》), The Ninth Widow (《第九個寡婦》), The Banquet Bug (《赴宴者》), and The Tales of Suizi (《穗子物語》). She is the recipient of several awards from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China, including the Asian Pacific Film Festival and the Golden Horse Awards.
Her works have been translated into 21 languages, including English, French, Dutch, Italian, German, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, Hebrew, Swedish, Uighur.
