• The Wilson Center invites scholars, practitioners, journalists and public intellectuals to take part in its flagship international Fellowship Program and to take advantage of the opportunity to engage actively in the Center’s national mission. The Center awards approximately 15-20 residential fellowships each year. Fellows will be affiliated with one or more of the Wilson Center programs/projects and are encouraged to interact with policymakers in Washington, D.C., with Wilson Center staff, and other scholars who are working on similar research and topics.  
• Fellows are expected to be in residence for the entire U.S. academic year (early September through May). Occasionally, fellowships are awarded for shorter periods, with a minimum of four months.

Since each field has different methodologies that the reviewer may not know, tell the reader what archives, sources, and techniques you plan to employ.

Capabilities and achievements of the applicant and the likelihood that the applicant will accomplish the proposed project; not only should your proposal demonstrate how you have the technical know-how and ability to reach some conclusion, but that the conclusion is not preconceived. The proposal should convince the reviewer that there is something genuinely at stake with your inquiry and that your project will yield interesting results. 
6. Potential of a candidate to actively contribute to the life, priorities, and mission of the Center by making expert research accessible to a broader audience; remember that one of the Center's main goals is to help inform policymakers to make well-informed decisions. 

• The Center welcomes in particular those projects that transcend narrow specialties and methodological issues of interest only within a specific academic discipline. Projects should involve fresh research-—in terms of both the overall field and the author’s previous work. • During their month long stay at the Center, Bogliasco Fellows are provided with living quarters (bedroom with private bath), full board, and a separate private studio in one of the three villas. All meals are shared, and every evening, Fellows come together for a formal dinner featuring typical cuisine from the Liguria region, such as focaccia, pesto, local produce, cheese and wines.
• Fellows will remain at the Study Center in Italy for the duration of their residencies.
• Bogliasco's selection process is based entirely on peer review by discipline, and a policy of rotating evaluators for each selection round to minimize bias. These international panelists include many Bogliasco alumni, as well as other distinguished professionals in all the disciplines. Panels evaluate applicants in each discipline based on achievement in their respective fields, commensurate with age, and the significance and potential impact of the project proposal.
• An oversight committee of specialists in each discipline reviews the initial selection reports and assists in crafting small residency groups of eight to ten Fellows, based on diversity of nationality, age, gender and discipline. A typical residency cohort includes one individual from each discipline area, an age range between 30 and 80, a mix of genders, and at least half fro countries outside the United States.
• Although there is no cost for a residency, Fellows are responsible for their own travel to and from the Study Center. Subject to the Study Center's availability and if requested in the application, Fellows may be accompanied by spouses/partners during their stay at the Study Center for a nominal daily fee. Spouses/partners who intend to pursue a project in one of the disciplines, and who wish to be designated as Bogliasco Fellows, must submit separate and complete applications.

• This specialized DAAD program offers German Studies Research Grants to highly-qualified undergraduate and graduate students who are nominated by the professor supervising their research project. The grant may be used for short-term research (one to two months) in Germany. The program is designed to encourage research and promote the study of cultural, political, historical, economic and social aspects of modern and contemporary German affairs from an inter- and multidisciplinary perspective.

• Applicants who currently hold or have held CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC postdoctoral fellowships are eligible to apply to the 2023-24 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program only if the term of that funding officially ends on or before September 30, 2024 and prior to the start of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship. Early termination of the agency-specific postdoctoral award for the purpose of application to the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program is not permitted.
• Applicants can apply for both the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program and other agency-specific postdoctoral fellowships programs (whether to the same or a different federal granting agency) at the same time, provided that the research proposed in each application falls within the mandate of the federal granting agency to which the application is submitted.
• Applicants must not hold a tenure-track or tenured faculty position, nor can they be on leave from such a position. Generally, "tenure or tenure-track" refers to an open-ended academic position in which the holder can form a research group, apply for externally funded research as a principal investigator, and teach.
• Only in rare circumstances will a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship be awarded to an applicant who is staying at the same institution or within the same research environment where they completed their PhD, PhD-equivalent or health professional degree. If an applicant chooses to apply in collaboration with the same institution (or its affiliated hospitals, research centres and other laboratories) or within the same research environment from which they obtained their PhD, PhD-equivalent or health professional degree, a solid justification must be provided in the Special circumstances attachment.

General: There are 2 types of Postdoctoral Fellowships:

European Postdoctoral Fellowships. They are open to researchers moving within Europe or coming to Europe from another part of the world to pursue their research career. These fellowships take place in an EU Member State or Horizon Europe Associated Country and can last between 1 and 2 years. Researchers of any nationality can apply.

Global Postdoctoral Fellowships. They fund the mobility of researchers outside Europe. The fellowship lasts between 2 to 3 years, of which the first 1 to 2 years will be spent in a non-associated Third Country, followed by a mandatory return phase of 1 year to an organisation based in an EU Member State or Horizon Europe Associated Country. Only nationals or long-term residents of the EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries can apply.

Eligibility:

• Should have a PhD degree at the time of the deadline for applications. Applicants who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree will also be considered eligible to apply.
• Must have a maximum of eight years experience in research, from the date of the award of their PhD degree, years of experience outside research and career breaks will not count towards the above maximum, nor will years of experience in research in third countries, for nationals or long-term residents of EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries who wish to reintegrate to Europe
• Should comply with mobility rules: they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the beneficiary (for European Postdoctoral Fellowships), or the host organisation for the outgoing phase (for Global Postdoctoral Fellowships) for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the call deadline.

• The objective of PFs is to support researchers’ careers and foster excellence in research. The Postdoctoral Fellowships action targets researchers holding a PhD who wish to carry out their research activities abroad, acquire new skills and develop their careers. PFs help researchers gain experience in other countries, disciplines and non-academic sectors.
• Interested researchers submit an application together with a host organisation, which can be a university, research institution, business, SME or other organisation based in an EU Member State or Horizon Europe Associated Country. All disciplines are eligible for Postdoctoral Fellowships, including research areas covered by the Euratom Research and Training Programme.

• Both types of fellowships may also include short-term secondments anywhere in the world during the fellowship (except during the return phase of a Global Fellowship).

• These fellowships support the most promising Canadian new scholars in the social sciences and humanities, and assist them in establishing a research base at an important time in their research careers. The purpose of these fellowships is to provide stipendiary support to recent PhD graduates who are: undertaking original research, publishing research findings, developing and expanding personal research networks, broadening their teaching experience, preparing for research-intensive careers within and beyond academia; and preparing to become competitive in national research grant competitions.

• The Government of Canada has deployed additional funds to increase direct support for Black student researchers. SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowships applicants who self-identify as Black and provide consent in their application to be considered for funds designated to specific groups may be eligible to receive an award as part of this initiative. 

The research proposed in a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship application must be significantly different and distinct from, or add significantly to, that related to the applicant’s doctoral thesis.

SSHRC offers supplementary funding to support scholarship and fellowship award holders, some of which is offered through joint initiatives.

• Application process: Applicants must complete the application form in accordance with the accompanying instructions. Applications must be submitted electronically directly to SSHRC. Requests to submit late applications will not be accepted. All referees and institutional nominators must use SSHRC’s online application system to submit their supporting letters before the deadline.The applicant is responsible for ensuring all required application components (CV, two letters of appraisal, Research Appraisal form, Institutional Nomination and Commitment form, and all attachments) have been submitted ahead of the deadline. • Merit review process:
• Step 1: In the application form, applicants will be asked to select the multidisciplinary merit review committees they consider most appropriate for the review of their proposal.
• Step 2: Once applicants submit their completed application and supporting documents (see Application process), SSHRC staff review all applications and forward eligible applications to the multidisciplinary merit review committees.
• Step 3: The multidisciplinary merit review committees review an entire cohort of applications and make recommendations about funding that are subject to SSHRC approval. The scores assigned to each application indicate the relative standing of an application within a given committee.
• The following criteria and scoring scheme are used to evaluate the applications:

1. Challenge—The aim and importance of the endeavour (20%): originality and potential significance of the proposed program of work. 
2. Feasibility—The plan to achieve excellence (30%): feasibility of the proposed program of work; appropriateness of the intended place of tenure; and effectiveness of the overall support provided by the host institution according to the Guidelines for Effective Research Training. 
3. Capability—The expertise to succeed (50%): fellowships, scholarships or other awards obtained; previous research experience and/or publications; and timely completion of doctoral studies, taking into account the nature of the program and any related personal circumstances that may have delayed the applicant’s academic career.

• Applicants (except postdoctoral fellows and PhD students) must be affiliated with a Canadian postsecondary institution that holds institutional eligibility at the time of application and before funding can be released.
• Researchers who maintain an affiliation with a Canadian postsecondary institution, but whose primary affiliation is with a non-Canadian postsecondary institution, are not eligible for applicant status.
• Postdoctoral fellows are eligible to be applicants for this grant. However, for SSHRC to release grant funds, successful applicants must formally establish an affiliation with a Canadian postsecondary institution that meets the requirements for institutional eligibility within five months of the grant start date  and maintain such an affiliation for the duration of the grant period.
• Students enrolled in a program of study are not eligible to apply. However, a PhD candidate is eligible to apply if they: 

1. Will have met all requirements for the PhD before the grant is awarded, including all course work and successful defence of their dissertation; and
2. Establish a formal affiliation with an eligible Canadian postsecondary institution within five months of the grant start date, and maintain such an affiliation for the duration of the grant period.

• Federal scientists who are affiliated with a Canadian postsecondary institution must demonstrate that their proposed research or research-related activity is not related to either the mandate of their employer or the normal duties for which they receive payment from that employer.
• Grant funds can only be administered by an eligible Canadian postsecondary institution. Institutions proposing to administer a grant awarded under this funding opportunity must hold or obtain institutional eligibility.
• Any individual who makes a significant contribution to the project is eligible to be a collaborator. Collaborators do not need to be affiliated with an eligible Canadian postsecondary institution.
• Individuals listed as co-applicants must meet the same eligibility criteria as those described under the Applicants section.
